My final journey in North America began, and I quickly found that the southern part of Panama is so different from everything I've seen so far. My path led me to an authentic native village and there, I found the perfect shelter for the night.
This will be a very important ride. This is my final ride in North America after three years.
Three. We finally got to the end of the continent. So yeah, so today I'm leaving Panama City
for a couple of days just to get to the end of the road and then come back to Panama City
because we need to prepare Chile for storage and shipment and all of that.
Yes, so I think today I'll be camping somewhere on the road because I have some suggestions
and then tomorrow we'll get to the end of the route. Something like that. Let's just go and
see what the day is going to bring us. Chile are you ready? Of course she's ready. She was born ready.
And you never guess what happened. So you remember a few days back I was camping and I lost my camera
at the campground and someone has found it. Actually they were mowing the grass and they
found it in the grass and they shipped it with a courier. So now I'm going to the courier place
to collect it. I'm so relieved. I'm getting my camera back. You know the DJI that I was using
on a helmet. I had it for so many years. It's been such a wonderful, reliable camera and I was so sad
I lost it. But now it's back. Let's go to pick it up.
It's back. So happy. Muchas gracias.
Welcome back in the team. And I'm off the main road because now we're going towards this
lake where I'm hoping I'll be able to camp. Apparently there are caves there so I don't know
if we'll be able to see. Nice, nice. Yes, I'm not sure. Maybe we'll even be able to see some caves, Chile.
Oh, this is a dam. All right, well. Oh wow, this is a massive difference in the level. I have to,
hold on, I have to stop for a second. Look, this is a big operation. Okay, let's see what's on this side.
A power plant. And the river here is so large. And on the other side we have a lake, an artificial lake
which is way higher, hey? We'll be camping at this lake, I believe. So let's just keep going.
I wonder what's that for. That hook and that other hook. Don't know.
Vultures. Hi guys. Sorry, sorry, just saying. I'm not gonna bother you. You guys looking cool?
Very dark? Well, well, well. I'm lost. Officially. Yeah. Nah, I'm supposed to go that way, not this way.
Right, well, we have to turn around. Okay, I think this is the way. Looks like the last bit
will be on dirt. Run, chicken, run! Oh, this is a nice road. I don't know what's going on.
I think I'm lost. My GPS is saying I need to take this gate. And that looks shut. There's a road here
but it looks to me like this is shut. But maybe there is another gate at the top, I reckon.
Maybe that's the entrance. And then we have to jump on this road on this side. Who are you?
Who are you? Who are you? Hello! And why are you so skinny? Hey, I wish I had food for you but I don't.
Oh, oh god, this dog is so skinny. Maybe you lost. Are you lost? Someone's dog but he's so skinny.
I don't have any food. Sorry, buddy. Oh, it's hot. Right, I have to turn around, chili.
This is not the way. Uh, yeah, here is good. Let's turn around here.
Come on, chili. It is low season now, so it's shut. So we won't be able to see caves, we won't be able
to camp here. Well, I don't know what should we do. I was really hoping I'll be camping today. Let's
see, let's see, let's see, let's not panic. Let's collect ourselves and see what iOverlander says.
Maybe there are some markings for this area where I can camp. Nothing. I can't find anything
in this area. Can't find anything on iOverlander except for this place and I can't find
anything on Google. So we're just gonna keep going. What do we have here? Oh, we have a nice
viewpoint. Well, this is very nice but we can't camp here, unfortunately. Okay, 120 kilometers,
there's some kind of cultural center. I don't know, but let's try. Let's just keep going.
Look at the houses here. They built the traditional way. What an interesting village.
I must say, this is a military checkpoint. I guess I have to stop.
So, I love this village. And here we have passage, I guess river passage with the bridge.
This region is so different. I must say, this last bit of Pan-American highway is very rough for
road centers in Panama. This is the roughest road I've been on in this country because all
the roads are so perfect. So this is a surprise, but I guess this is the end.
And there's not many cities here. Actually, there are no cities at all.
There's just small villages along the way and that's about it. So basically from Panama City,
I'm going 280 maybe kilometers that way and back. That's it. This is the trip
to get to the end of the road. Looks like there's a heavy rain ahead of me.
I detoured from the main road again and I'm going to this town called Boca de Lara.
Apparently, apparently, there is a cultural center and they have cabanas. So let's just
hope it's going to be open. We're here. Puerto Lara. But, well, I don't know. I can't see any
cultural center here or cabanas. What's here? I think this could be maybe they were doing dance
there. Yeah, I do not think we'd be able to find an accommodation here. End of the road.
Another river here. What to do? What to do? What is this?
Maybe we should ask if we can camp there. Okay, well, this is a seafood restaurant,
I believe. Let me go and ask if I can camp there. Because if this is a restaurant,
they should have a toilet. They have a toilet. Maybe I can camp there. There's plenty of space.
Right, no luck. Chillie, chillie, you're looking good at the end of the road. Let me take a picture
of you. Chillie at the end of the road. That's it. No camping. I tried. What will you do? I think
it's very possible this is the cultural center, but it looks like, hola, it looks like they just
dance there. There was no camping option. Here, no cabanas? Yeah. No, I can't see anything really
here. All right, well, we tried. But you know, this area feels really different. Where is he?
Feels really different than the rest of Panama. It's just, it feels like native people live more
traditional way here. The houses are built in traditional way. Their outfits are quite
traditional. Oh, have a look here. You know what I mean? Oh, this would be nice for camping.
Wait, I think it is camping. What? Campo. This is Campo. Campo. Oh, there's no one here.
Oh, I would totally want to use baño and I could like camp under this shelter. Oh my god,
this would be like the best thing ever. Okay, there is a sign with a phone number,
so I'm just going to contact them. I have to straight you. There's literally no one here.
Well, I was very lucky. Some locals were walking by and they sent someone to the owners so they
can come and collect money. So I'm staying here for the night. Look at this place. It's like a
traditional village. You know what I mean? But it's a campground. Then that large one
building in the middle, that's actually a room. You can sleep there. And then here we have like
a kitchen, but there's no one here at the moment. And you have all these little shelters. So this
is the plan. I'm just going to sleep under the shelter. I still haven't decided if I'm going
to set up my tent or not. Okay, Julie, I've got a wonderful spot for you, honey. Here, stay there.
Is everyone ready? I'm sorry. Right, so this is where we're going to stay for the night.
Let me show you my setup. So I thought I'm not going to set up a tent and I'm just going to
sleep on the floor, but then I changed my mind because there's a lot of bugs in here. I don't know what
they are. They're like wasps or something, like tiny bees. I don't know how to call them. Anyway,
that's why I'm sleeping in the tent. This is so cool, right? I love it. Time to cook dinner because
I'm so hungry. And look, guys even brought me this little table and a chair. They're so kind.
So we are doing proper cooking today.
Ready. Tonight's dinner, well, one of my usuals, tomato, onion, garlic,
soy protein that looks like meat, and then what else? Peas. That's it. Healthy and nutritious. Very nice.
This is Marie. Marie prepared for me shower. So we walk into the shower now.
This is my shower. So this is the toilet.
I thought maybe we have other shower.
Okay, excellent. Okay. Perfect. Perfect. Thank you very much.
Can you close my door? I don't think I can do it. I can't close my door.
Okay, I'm in.
This is interesting.
Yeah, it's cold. But at least I won't be so sweaty. Oh my god, it's so cold.
It's very fresh.
Okay, I'm clean now. It's getting dark. It's time to get ready for bed.
Not sure why there are people there. Perfecto. Gracias. Gracias.
That's it. It's time for bed. This is so strange because there was no one here
when I arrived and now half of the village is here. So there are people like
in that shelter there. I think they're staying overnight. Then next door I have neighbors as well.
I don't know if they're going anywhere. Maybe they all are here for my security.
Don't know. Anyhow, it's bedtime. I'll see you guys tomorrow.
Well, this is going to be unimportant. Well, this will be unimportant and important and
