Watercolor Lily of the Valley -tips on how You can paint this!!!
Okay so for Lily of the Valley I've gave you a reference photo attached here.
It's a simple kind of like curved line stem and then these like little bells
and then we've got these nice leaves. They kind of look like tulip leaves. They kind of go
you know they're kind of wide and they kind of go skinny and they can kind of curve in.
Just to draw them really simply again you can think of the line as you see in the photograph
and then just making a bell. So up and down like upside down U and just draw indentations
and you have the little bell. Same come off here just draw the little U and the little
cute little bells and then you have your wonderful Lily of the Valley and then of course you can just
draw the simple leaf. Now this one has a little conical like this and then we have one that comes
out this way right and you can just draw another one too like one or two or three. I'm going to
leave here and do another one of these. If you want to do the same thing just opposite kind of
make up your own Lily of the Valley. Just simple that and then we're going to talk about painting
it. Okay so I'm grabbing my 14 round Neptune series from Princeton brush grabbing some
Ultramarine Blue Deep and some Burnt Sienna more on the blue side and I'm just kind of putting some
light blue color bluish gray color on all those little bells that we see
kind of mostly on the left I'm not filling it completely all the way in just a little bit of
wash of color just around the bells themselves. Now I chose this really big brush to paint those
little tiny bells of flowers because it becomes much looser when you paint with a bigger brush
when you have a smaller brush you have a tendency to paint a little stiff and more precise and we're
you don't have to be super precise and realistic when you're painting anything it's much more fun
in my opinion for me I like the stylized look of something that's a little loose and kind of
carefree and so I choose to use this big brush well it's bigger for most people and it's good
to have a brand new brush because if I have an older brush it won't be as pointy in the tip
you know. So I'm mixing up some Cabin Yellow Deep and some Prussian Blue to get this nice
light green I'm gonna fill in the stems that connect those little bells just gonna just spit
it up a little bit just so you won't get bored watching me paint a stem but you're really just
filling in those stems that we drew and just filling in that color it's like a light lime-ish
green by mixing the yellow and blue you can add a little burnt sienna like I'm adding here it's
making more brown or or olive green you can change the greens up you can add a little bit more blue
you know this is supposed to be fun and you know a little bit more
exciting by adding different colors that you choose that you like right and I'll start to
fill in the leaves here um yes by the way I'm using Bauhung 100% cotton cold pressed paper
this is a 7 by 10 inch block and I'll add a bit more Prussian Blue to get this little leaf a
little darker you can vary the tones of the leaves by adding more yellow a little bit more blue
you can make your greens all different colors you can add a different green you know by having
a different blue tone with your yellow different yellow with it so make the greens a little bit
more you know have a little bit more variety to them I'm adding a little more yellow and now I'm
adding a little more Prussian Blue to get that deep dark green and I want to put that dark color
around my little bells there because they really pop and I sped this up because again monotonous
to watch me do this you're just outlining around the bells in this dark deep green
right filling it in with this brush and this is a small area you don't have to worry about
making sure it's flat or not I'll add some yellow on the top of it so it's a little bit lighter on
top a little bit darker as we go down towards the little bells super cute yes you know you
not miss me paint and you listen to every little word I say if you want the long extended version
it's on my patreon along with the trace um so here we're going to add a little bit more deeper
color like I said around the bells taking your time I'm still using this big brush and the reason
again is so that it's even though we're going around the bells and it seems a little bit daunting
it just makes it looser you're not going to have it perfect lines and that's what I want to see I
want to see something a little bit more loose and fun uh not so perfect the bells won't be perfect
the shapes won't look perfect and it's something I enjoy just a loose style if you want something
a little bit more tight uh I suggest you know using a smaller stiffer brush if you want to do
that but for me I could do it all in this 14 seriously you just take your time it's got a
great tip and just paint it all in with the colors um wiping away some of the screen if I wanted it
lighter on top I can kind of just mop it up by lifting up the paint diluting it with a little
bit of water I can go back in if I feel like it's too light and add a little bit of a wash of the
yellow or brown or whatever color I want but again I want to get that darker color around those
little bells so the little lilies so they just stand out you know negative painting of the
picture this is the negative this is the opposite you know of the white negative space so it really
pops and we're not going to leave it just white for the bells we're going to add some color to it
because obviously you don't want to just white white they all have nuance to them they'll have
some grays maybe some blush tones all the kind of sun stuff but adding the dark colors behind
them really makes them pop as you can see and take my time with this and like I said if you need
to use a small brush use a small brush I like the bigger brush you can use the back of the brush and
scrape just like I did just like I showed you guys on the tulips and the leaves there do the
same thing here while it's still damp you can have veins in there by doing that I'm going back
and adding some more prussian blue into my green a little bit of burnt umber and get a little bit
darker for this petal I'm assuming this leaf over here I don't know why I always say petal and leaf
all the time oh my god I'm missing them out dyslexia or something I don't know um but yeah
change up the colors obviously because it's behind it it should be a little bit darker
I'll make the bottom this one because it's like flipped over dark underneath that I fill in a
little bit more darker paint if I feel like it needs it right around by the bells themselves
just filling it all in so really you can see them starting to pop right the negative space they
really pop so now I'm going to just take my brush it's going to wisp with a nice little stroke on
those leaves give it some lines get some personality you know you want to just flat color you want to
give some personality you want to add some stripes in there you can see in the photograph that I
attached that has like these lines and away from the shadows of the grooves and the actual leaves
themselves or the twisting and turning so you want to put those in and just kind of take your brush
and move it from the like bottom to the top and kind of go through the the lines of like the the
shape of the of the leaf so it's curved on the sides a little bit more straighter in the middle
and do that you don't have to put stripes on every single leaf by the way you know it could
be kind of monotonous it's just kind of flat in some areas and stripes in some other areas
I'm putting some in here filling this in I might go back and change it I don't know
I always like paint and as I paint I step back and I look and see do I like it do I not like it
I might have to lift up some color all that kind of stuff I'm just filling in the greens here I
might change my mind and just take some of it out lift a little bit so I decided to lift some color
out of this leaf and basically take a damp brush right clean damp brush and go over that color and
lift it and tap it back on your paper towel and you get lifting technique so that you lift up the
color and it's a little lighter underneath because I just felt like it didn't want to keep
it like that I'm going to grab my ultramarine blue deep again and my burnt sienna a little
bit more on the blue side of course less burnt sienna and that's when I do a little light wash
on all my little bells because they shouldn't be super white they should have a little color to
them and obviously the ones behind the other the bell that's in front you want to have that little
bit more gray right so you can just take the same gray that I talked about I'm using an 8
princeton 8 long round I've got the small skinny brush now and I'm outlining the little bells that
don't have the leaves behind them and I'll kind of wash in some color with the ones that do
in front of it so you're just filling those in you know adding a little color to that so it's
just not white white see how I put the gray behind that one behind it that should get a little bit
more gray than the one in front obviously because it's behind it the shadow is created from the one
in front of it and like I said it doesn't have to be just blueish gray you can ask just a little
pale blue a little pale pink you know add some more color because white isn't always white it's
got grays in there it could have some browns in there it could have some greens in there
it could have some blush tones and you'll add all those colors in there um yeah just it just
gives it a little bit more realism in a way but even though it's really kind of loose you know
what this is and I'm just washing that color and I'm gonna make some blush by adding bright rose
and cadmium yellow deep I'm gonna get in there and get some more bright rose in there to get
a nice blush color I'm just gonna tap some of that color and those little bells as well
I'm just gonna leave color in there super sweet and again I'm still using the eight long round
taking my time I might actually add some more yellow to my green and fill in some more stems
or a little you know add another stem I just decided to add another stem in the background
just I felt like it why not grabbing some of my darker greens and adding some more of those
lines that I was felt like it was missing and some like dark tones behind that you can do that
you can choose to do that and not choose to do that I was choosing to do that maybe add a little
tinge more of yellow a little wash color of that you know to fill it all up now I'm going to do
something I love to do now you see I'm kind of moving fast here and I didn't really slow this
down I didn't even really speed up the video that much but I'm just taking my my Princeton three
fourths inch flat wash brush and I'm taking some of the green that you see in the right hand
grabbing some of that white green and moving that on top and around my leaves rather quickly I'm
I'm pretty quick with this stuff and I'll grab some browns and I'll wash in this color in and
around just to give it a different look a stylized look you don't have to do this you can leave it
the way it was and call it a day and love it I'm adding in some ultramarine blue deep making some
grays I might add in a little bit more blue in the background you can make it more dramatic having
more colors you know choose what you choose what you have so I do this technique often on my channel
here it's fun I'd like to like move the paint around and just change it up a little bit with
the most stylized version I'm like washing away some of the leaves there you know I could splatter
a little bit all that great stuff it's just playing with the watercolor to see what I can
do to make a little bit more stylized myself and something I enjoy a little too stiff before I
wanted a little bit more fun so I'm wiping away some of the color it just gives it a unique
personality than just sitting there being like oh cute little picture of Lily of the Valley
it's just a Ellen way it's what I like to do and if you like it that's great you don't have to do it
I love to do it something I enjoy have a little paper towel close by in case I go a little overboard
you know I can always go in there and clean up the lines like I'm doing here a little bit with my
brush and this is the flat wash brush I love to use the flat wash brush for this kind of technique
basically it's lifting and moving the paint around so that's all it is so I hope you enjoyed it let
me know leave a comment below like I said patreon members get the trace and the extended version
