Recent scientific investigations of Antarctica’s ice sheet have identified a significant source of heat beneath the frozen surface, helping explain long-standing anomalies detected in satellite and radar data. Researchers now point to a combination of geothermal activity and a large underlying structure as the main contributors to localized warming beneath the ice.

In particular, heat flow from the Earth’s mantle, together with friction generated by a kind of “frozen forest” in motion and deep subglacial water systems, appears to be influencing ice dynamics in certain regions.
