Recent scientific investigations of Antarctica’s ice sheet have identified a significant source of heat beneath the frozen surface, helping explain long-standing anomalies detected in satellite and radar data. Researchers now point to a combination of geothermal activity and a large underlying structure as the main contributors to localized warming beneath the ice.

In particular, heat flow from the Earth’s mantle, together with friction generated by a kind of “frozen forest” in motion and deep subglacial water systems, appears to be influencing ice dynamics in certain regions. In some areas, this heat is strong enough to maintain liquid water lakes beneath kilometers of ice, as observed in well-studied subglacial environments. What is now being suggested is that this hidden underground world may have remained preserved in a frozen state for a very long time and is now, in a sense, “reactivating,” contributing to localized warming and gradually revealing portions of a long-buried landscape.
