James Webb Telescope Just Revealed The True Scale of the Universe, and It's Terrifying

Space is infinite. We are surrounded by a never-ending sea of planets, stars, and galaxies that extend out in every direction, for a distance that is unfathomable to the human mind. This is what we are told at least, but when we look out into space with our own eyes, we do not see an endless glow of light.

Instead, what we see in that deep infinity beyond the stars is nothing. The black void. That blackness marks an edge, not the edge of the universe, but the end of our ability to perceive it.

The distance from where we are right now to the edge of the perceivable universe is about 46.5 billion light years. And that expands out in every direction, creating a perfect sphere of observable space that is about 93 billion light years across. A light year is simply the distance that light can travel in the time it takes for the earth to orbit the sun.
