The Shor House on Mayne Island stands as a testament to the innovative approach of using recycled wood in construction. Designed by Scalable Architecture, this project embraces the principle of alchemy, transforming basic materials into something valuable. By carefully deconstructing existing wooden structures and repurposing the materials, the Shor House extends the life cycle of wood that would otherwise end up in landfills.
The decision to salvage wood from the previous house and barn on the waterfront location reflects a commitment to sustainability. Contractors meticulously de-nailed and stacked the reclaimed wood, initially without a clear plan for its reuse. However, through creative vision and design, the wood found new life in the construction of the Shor House.
Retaining most of the existing foundations while rotating the long axis of the new building by 90 degrees not only honored the site's history but also facilitated the building approval process. This innovative approach not only showcases the beauty of recycled wood but also highlights the importance of sustainable design practices.
With an area of 3,500 square feet, the Shor House stands as a beacon of sustainable architecture, demonstrating how recycled materials can be used to create stunning and environmentally conscious structures. Credit goes to the design team led by Clinton Cuddington, Piers Cunnington, Patrick Gonzales, and James Papa, along with the main contractor, Powers Construction, for bringing this vision to life.
