The St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by its then-music director Yuri Temirkanov.
Respighi’s Adagio con variazioni was composed in 1921 and is closely connected to an earlier, unpublished Cello Concerto in E minor from 1902. This Adagio in fact began life as that concerto’s slow movement. Respighi later revised and expanded it into the standalone piece here. It is not sure, but Respighi may have prepared a version of the work for cello and piano in 1912, but did not publish it. Instead he returned to it in 1921 to make the more elaborate orchestral version.
Mischa Maisky also performs Bruch's Kol Nidrei in the 2003 gala from which this piece is taken. Naturally, the gala starts with Tchaikovsky: but there are also further works by Saint-Saëns and Ravel plus a generous selection of operatic highlights starring soprano Anna Netrebko and of the late baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky.
