Where the Lake Is Still | Acrylic Mountain Lake Painting

Today I’m painting a quiet mountain lake scene in acrylics, with snow on the peaks, pine trees around the water, a small cabin, and a bright foreground full of grass, rocks, and little flowers.

This painting is on an 11 x 14 inch canvas, and the process is silent so you can focus on the brushwork, color placement, and how each layer builds on the last. This one is better suited for intermediate and advanced painters who want to practice depth, reflections, mountain structure, and natural texture without rushing through the details.

I started with a soft blue sky, then built the mountain with Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue, White, Black, and a small touch of Orange to keep the shadows more natural. The snow needs a light hand here. Too much white can flatten the mountain quickly, so I kept the shadow areas visible and used broken strokes to suggest the ridges.

The forest and lake are built slowly in layers. The greens come from Sap Green, Light Green, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow, and some of the blues from the background, which helps the whole scene feel connected. I used softer, cooler marks for the distant trees and stronger fan brush texture for the closer pines. For the water, I kept the strokes mostly horizontal so the reflections stay calm instead of looking busy.

The foreground has more movement, with grass strokes, rocks, a small path, and flower details added near the end. I tried to keep the detail strongest in the front while still letting the mountain and lake remain the main focus.

There is no voice over in this tutorial. It’s meant to be watched closely, especially the brush pressure, layering order, and small corrections that happen as the painting develops.
