New Zealand Road Trip Pt.4: Queenstown + Ben Lomond Hike

Stunning Nature

Very chilly Queenstown this morning, like six degrees. Nice, fresh six degrees and we're about
to ascend even higher up the gondola to do the Ben Lomond hike. It's eight degrees now.
I think our body temp's gonna warm up pretty quick. We've just taken the main gondola which
gives you a bit of a head start on the Ben Lomond hike. You can walk it from town
but we've taken the easier option. So it's between five and seven hour return hike.
Off we go. Gone from six degrees to 16 degrees in five minutes.
How's bubba this morning? Good. Asleep, always asleep on a walk. Love's a walk.
We're on a near constant incline so far.
Hello. I don't know how people are mountain biking this. It's so steep.
Did it say 4k before? So we've done one and a half k. It's the first one and a
half k from the gondola. It's pretty consistently inclined. Oh yes, that's the good bit.
We're about an hour and 25 minutes in and we can see the summit up there so it goes a little bit
unmarked path. Unmarked path for the last one k to the summit so we're kind of on a bit of a ridge
now. It's very cloudy up here, very cold but we're hoping that sun burns through for the ultimate
reveal. Come on. There's actually a toilet at the top, well at the one k from the summit so
that's handy. Getting to get some pretty epic views up here.
So we're two and a half hours in. We're just about to hit the summit and I think this is
the first time we've had a flat stretch.
Enjoying every second.
Oh yeah. We made it. We made it. Then Le Mans summit.
Wow. Can't see much at the moment but the sun feels like it might just burn through.
So Queenstown is just down there. You can see the trail that we have just done all the way around
there and then all the way up to the summit which was just up there.
Wow. What do we think of that hike? It was unreal. Unbelievable. Oh my gosh. So it is now
four o'clock. We set off at 10.15 so total from the top of the skyline gondola five and a half
hours and that allowed us to stop at the top and take photos a lot. Oh that was absolutely insane.
Perfect day hike. Yeah you just pay the 66 dollars return on the gondola and the rest of it
is free. Take your lunch.
Best feeling in the world. Right here. It's gonna steam. Steam up the lens.
Oh the toes are free again. Wow. These girls need a shower tonight. First ice cream.
Molly has found herself some oysters. Red wine and onion. Nice. Oh my goodness.
Cheers cheers. Look at that phenomenal scenes.
All right perfect it's that time. It's the worst time. It's got to be done. It's got to be done.
We're going on three? Yeah. One two three.
What have we got to report today? So we're actually dropping off the camp here which is
such a hack that I didn't know about. Most people you know you'll pick up from Christchurch, do a
loop and end up back there but another option which we've taken is start in Christchurch,
pick up the camper and then drop off the camper in Queenstown. I think there's like an additional
fee. Yeah this thing is a small fee but it's on top of if you were to drop it off in Christchurch
but then you're not doing a whole drive back to Christchurch. I think it's like five or six hours
that you're saving. Yeah. And Queenstown is that good. Like you want extra time here if possible
instead of driving. We're gonna go back for a Ferg burger in a bit but right now we're gonna tuck
into some cookie time cookies if you know you know and we're gonna have a cup of tea with this view.
Time for a Ferg burger. Are you excited? Yeah, I've already got it.
We got the goods. Final night in Queenstown. Cheers.
Fergie burger, I couldn't resist. Let's see if they're just as good as they were 10 years ago.
You're at the Codfather. Yeah. First impressions of the fish one? It's good. Yeah? I mean it's
huge, good portion size. Yum and I got the lamb. Yeah that's good. What a special trip that's been
filled with views. Views for days, teas for days, biscuits for days, mountains for days
and the most perfect little sexy baby moon we could have wished for really. We're both ready
for a bath now. A bath, a facial, a laundry day and a reset. Oh wow we will definitely be back
New Zealand. You are built for adventure, built for road trips and I have no doubt that we will be
back very soon for a little whiny weekend in Queenstown once the baby's out. Yes, girls weekend.
Girls weekend in Queenstown. Thank you for the first road trip. That was so good. I love you.
Love you so much. Nobody needs to see this. All the people are like dropping off their canvas and
we're like ahh. We're going back to the same destination, we're on the same flight for three
hours. You are so welcome. All of the travel guides for everywhere we've been are going to be linked
in the description. The google map legend is there so you can copy and paste our wonderful adventure
but for now, ciao. Ciao for now. Oh what's bye in Maori? The most common way to say goodbye in
See you later. Oh see you later.
Until next time. Yes.
I'm definitely pronouncing that wrong.
