Life at School

Oi.
Oh my god.
Hello.
You ready to fix this video?
Fix the video?
No, that can't.
I'm joking.
I'm good.
How are you?
I'm alright.
It's just, I'm kind of stressed.
Going through the footage, I'm realising.
What up?
I gotta go to the library.
I'm realising, I was really hyped when I first filmed this video.
Because I was like, okay, this is a beautiful day in the life.
I haven't really shared my life at school.
I've shared like little bits of it, but not like a real day in my life, you know?
And then I'm going through all the footage, and it's beautiful, but it's boring.
I don't want to like, because the shots are great.
But yeah, it's a little bit, I guess you could say boring.
Maybe.
We should look up like a college day in the life.
And then maybe we'll use that as inspiration.
Yeah.
What do people do for a day in the life?
Wake up in between 6 and 5.
30.
Already up and mobile.
I'm curious, what are the most views?
It is 5.30am.
I love that sound.
I also like to start my day by making a tea.
It's not like epic in the morning.
I usually wake up freaking early.
Yes, yes, yes, yes.
Oh, let's watch my boy Ellie.
This is the thing though.
Why is all of my day in the life coming up with London stabbings?
For videos next month, I'm thinking a day in the life, because I haven't done one yet.
Yeah, I think that could be cool.
I mean, are you still thinking about getting that new camera?
Maybe you said a couple of days ago or something.
Yeah, yeah.
It's the Sony EV-E1.
Okay.
It's the new one with the full frame sensor.
Which is super powerful.
And it's super lightweight.
The thing is, there's no story.
That's what it comes down to.
It's a day in the life.
But there's no story.
It's like, why?
What is the point of this day in my life?
You can take sh** and edit it into a great thing.
Yeah, there's got to be something salvageable here, because the shots are beautiful.
And there is a story.
There's always a story.
We just have to figure out what the story is.
But first things first.
It came in the mail.
And it's super lightweight.
Check it out.
Yeah, it has really powerful low-light capability.
It also has AI-based autofocus tracking.
So I can get some scenes of me walking.
But then also some of me going up the stairs.
And then it'll be able to track my face well.
Yeah.
It'll be perfect to get stunning shots.
Alright, cool.
We'll chat soon.
I've got to head out and run to a meeting.
But yeah.
All the best until then.
Alright, see you in a bit, brother.
Alright, see you.
Bye.
If we present it as it is now, there is a story behind it that people don't know.
Because they don't know what you're thinking.
Everyday lives are mundane.
But we need to tell people that in a way in which they're going to listen.
That, like right now, is what actually creates the issue in the first place.
Is that I know if it is a boring day in the life, which is a true accurate representation of my life.
It won't get views and people won't see it.
And then I feel like I have to hypersensationalize my life or inject certain things.
To make sure that it will go viral and that it will get views, right?
It's like I've got to wake up at 4 a.m. now.
Because I only woke up at 7.
But if I wake up at 4, people are going to be like, oh my god, you woke up at 4?
But there's no larger story.
I don't know if it makes people feel something.
And I think that is what storytelling should do or what videos should do.
When they're at their best, right?
Storytelling breeds empathy and conveys emotion and makes you question something.
Think about the world differently.
And I think day in the lives are this very surface level chronological narrative.
It's like now I'm eating lunch.
Now I'm biking to school.
Now I'm walking to class.
Now I'm in the gardens.
And it's like cool.
But what is the story?
What is the point?
And maybe the story is in the mundane.
I'll send you this podcast.
She was on the Diary of a CEO about orange juice and how we think it's healthy for us.
Is it not?
It's so bad.
What?
How many kids do you want?
Two.
Maybe three?
Yeah.
Two, maybe three.
Two?
But I feel like the girl I marry would be a bit crazier.
Three.
Because three is the variable that you can't control.
My parents always said, don't let the kids outnumber the parents.
Yeah.
Which makes sense.
Every innovation risks becoming a rule.
And innovation risks becoming an end in itself.
When we make a discovery that serves our work, it's not unusual to concretize.
Concretize?
I don't think the word concretize is such a formula.
On occasion we decide this formula as who we are as an artist.
What our voice is and what our voice isn't.
So many people feel pressure.
And the reason people are unhappier than, well, never, one of the reasons is because
everybody thinks everybody lives these really amazing, adventurous lives.
Which I think we've both been fortunate to at times.
But the reality is most of the time my life is quite boring.
And I'm just working.
And I get out.
And I go to Tesco's and I get a meal deal.
I say hello to some of my flatmates.
And I work.
And maybe see a friend.
Some days life is really fun.
And I travel and go abroad.
But that's not the reality.
And that's not the reality of if you're trying to chase after something meaningful.
Life is boring.
And it's putting an unrealistic pressure to expect people that your life has to be
what in reality, what everybody thinks it is when you compare.
But that's only 5%.
Yeah.
Is there that many pieces?
Yeah.
Is there that many pieces saying that?
Yeah.
And then also the dilemma with the internet.
And what I'm feeling with this video is I'm like it's not interesting enough.
It's not going to get enough views.
I'm not doing anything or injecting anything crazy that will make it go viral that people
will comment about in the description.
And I'm like because of that.
It feels the same way.
Hey, hey, hey.
Alright.
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning, when you arrive at work, a joy, a depression, some momentary awareness
comes as an unexpected visitor.
Still, treat each guest honorably.
It may be clearing you out for someone you don't know you talk to.
The dark thought.
The shame.
The badness.
Meet them.
Let the door open.
Laugh at them.
And invite them in.
How do you balance both?
Maybe we almost like, we could almost tell people, we need to tell them some of this
cool.
People need to see this chap.
We need to like, what if like we tell a story where we let them into the creative process?
What if the story is us figuring out this story?
The story is the story of us trying to figure out the story.
Yeah.
Within the story that needs to be discovered and then all that is the story.
Yeah, exactly.
We have to edit this video and our conversations and the calls and stuff is the story of us
trying to figure out the story as we move through the story.
Yes.
And all that will be the story and the conclusion will only be found when we are done with the
story.
Yeah.
In like seven days from now.
And then whatever the story is, the story is.
Oh, that's fine.
That's fine.
So we like literally are editing the video as we go and then we only can finish editing
the video once we finish the course.
So it's like a real time YouTube video.
Yeah.
I almost feel like we could do one of those where we leave the audience leaving a little
bit confused, but with some themes of emotion and try and let them figure it out.
Almost like a puzzle.
That.
That was actually really, I feel really bad.
Jesus, my parents.
Okay, now great.
You actually broke my glass.
I didn't think it was going to smash.
I thought it was just going to like, I thought it was going to bounce off.
Thank you for watching.
I just want to quickly add a couple more comments and notes before we wrap this all up.
First off, I got to work with Sony on this video.
A total dream come true.
I don't often share how I make my videos.
If you're wondering how I shot this, I can give a little behind the scenes kind of peek,
shall we call it to that.
But if we go into file format, the whole video was shot on S-Log3, which essentially means
you have a very powerful file, which allows you to make anything you shoot look like a movie.
Another quick thing, if you get it on the menu a little bit more, you get a steady shot.
One of the really cool features that the camera has is the dynamic active mode, which I think
is 5-axis stabilization, which is really nice for the shots that I was moving.
It wasn't super shaky.
If you go back and watch my videos years ago, you can see a lot of my shots were shaky,
and I got a lot of comments about that.
And one of the other good things is, again, the pull-out screen here.
For some of the shots where I had the tripod on the stairs, I was able to see myself in frame there.
And then other ones where I had the camera super high up and looking down, you can also
adjust it to look down, which isn't always available on cameras, and a really nice feature
as you're trying to frame yourself.
I think if you're looking for a camera, if you want to make videos, YouTube videos, you
want to film things, even you can take photos with the camera you can see there.
This can do it all.
So there's so many more features to dive into.
I can't go through all of them today, but that's just a quick kind of sneak peek into
how I shot this video and some of the features that I used.
There'll be a link in the description.
You can learn more.
Check out the camera.
Buy the camera.
Yeah, I guess that's all for now.
I'll talk to you guys soon.
Cut.
