Georges Bizet (25 October 1838 – 3 June 1875), registered at birth as Alexandre César Léopold Bizet, was a French composer of the romantic era. Best known for his operas in a career cut short by his early death, Bizet achieved few successes before his final work, Carmen, which has become one of the most popular and frequently performed works in the entire opera repertoire.

Variations chromatiques de concert pour piano (1868)
Arranged in 1933 for orchestra by Felix Weingartner (1863-1942)
Original piano version dedication: à Stephen Heller

Theme (Moderato maestoso) - 14 Variations and Coda.

San Francisco Ballet Orchestra conducted by Martin West

According to Russian Wikipedia:
The piece is dedicated to the pianist Stefan Geller.

Although the Variations were sporadically performed (for example, in 1890 a reviewer noted the sophistication and completeness of their performance by Clotilde Kleberg), the work was considered forgotten until the time when it was resurrected by Glenn Gould, who considered the Chromatic Variations to be "one of the very few masterpieces of the solo piano repertoire that arose in the third quarter of the nineteenth century". Gould recorded the Variations for the first time in 1971, and there are also recordings by Setrak, Julia Severus and on Hyperion Roberto Prosseda.

In 1933, the piece was orchestrated by Felix Weingartner.

In 1962, Vladimir Burmeister staged a ballet for the Paris Grand Opera to the music of the Chromatic Variations
