This peacock doesn’t just live at the sanctuary… He runs it! Wiley was once a mysterious wanderer that no one could quite catch, until one clever rescue changed everything. Now safe at Tamerlaine Sanctuary, he greets humans on his own terms, shows off for anyone watching, and even makes surprise appearances at weddings. Watch how this bold, beautiful bird turned his second chance into a life of admiration and attention.
I think I'll go to the bathroom this morning.
Can you imagine walking into the main bathroom of a home
and there's just a peacock peeking in the window?
Every day, you will see him be persistent
and say, open the door.
It's me, Wiley.
And then we open the door, he's like, finally,
I've been waiting here for you.
Now you can admire me.
Good morning, beautiful boy.
Most peacocks don't care about people,
but Wiley is not your regular peacock.
Wiley was living in a neighborhood,
and the community was kind of feeding him,
taking care of him.
But they really knew that he had to get to a sanctuary
because winter was coming.
And Wiley got his name because he is very Wiley,
and he was very hard to catch.
But there was one woman in particular
who was feeding Wiley near her garage.
So she knew that Wiley really loved peanuts.
That is how she finally lured him into her garage.
And once he was in the garage, they were able to capture him.
So the opportunity had to take it.
We got a call about Wiley from the rescue
in Long Island, New York.
The rescuer knew that we already had a female peacock.
We love you.
So he definitely contacted us first
to see if we would be able to take Wiley in.
And we said, yes, of course.
Good morning.
I knew that he would probably be harder to work with.
And it turns out that Wiley is quite wild.
We had to keep him in quarantine before he met anyone.
He was very unhappy about it.
He didn't attack anyone or bite anyone or do any damage.
He just really wanted his independence.
He definitely did not want to be handled,
so he would fly away.
But we were unsure if he would try to escape or run away.
We knew that we would have to give him his freedom in order
for him to be happy.
So we were just day by day watching him.
Birds are pretty smart.
And they know that if they're being taken care of
and they're being fed, that this is a good place to be.
So I think he was smart enough to understand.
And he really kind of showed us that he
decided this was his home.
That's scary, Wiley.
Plus, we had lovely Belle the peacock here.
So I'm sure he wanted to hang out with her.
They definitely got along.
But Wiley spends a lot of time on his own.
He's not interested at all.
He fancies himself as kind of the overseer
of the property.
He does his rounds every day.
He takes them very seriously.
So Albie digs holes.
And Wiley does baits in them.
He's always showing off for all of the animals here.
He focuses on the birds definitely
more than the other animals.
But you'll see him with the pigs.
You'll see him in the goat barn.
You'll see him out with the cows.
Peacock are constantly showing off.
But Wiley doesn't always just show off for the females.
One of our turkeys named Monty.
He is a very friendly, sweet boy.
And I'm sure Wiley was doing a dance for him
to show off for him.
They were dancing the tango together.
We never expected to have such a character here at the sanctuary.
But Wiley is a very unique individual.
He has a very big personality.
It's not like he is bossing people around.
He is just really making sure that everybody
pays attention to him and everybody
understands how beautiful he is.
I think his constant mantra in his head
is, where are my admirers?
When he first came here, it was impossible to catch him.
And now he knows us and he trusts us.
But he is very independent.
And he does not want anybody telling him what to do.
I feel like Wiley sees us as his servants.
And that is basically what we are.
We pretty much let Wiley do whatever he wants to do.
Wiley, you want to party with us?
If Wiley wants to come inside, whoever is there
will let him inside.
It's like an honor for us.
Like, wow, he wants to come in and spend time with us.
It's like we're being blessed by the king.
But he really refuses to sleep inside.
He comes up the hill and he watches the sunset for a while.
This is his nightly ritual.
And then he sleeps in a giant honey locust tree
right outside of the house.
And it's breathtaking to watch.
And I would say that Wiley's favorite thing to do
is to join our wedding.
Beautiful.
He makes it his job at every wedding
to get up there on that roof and show off to everyone.
Wiley, that's his name?
He knows his name?
Does he know?
Wiley.
He's always the star of the wedding.
And everybody in the crowd looks up and they're like,
oh my god, look at that peacock.
He's like, yes, look at me.
I'm beautiful.
It definitely makes the event better.
And it makes the bride and groom feel
as though they're very special, like they've
had a blessing from Wiley.
Can you imagine?
He thinks everybody is there to see him.
I mean, he just loves being the center of attention.
Wiley.
He is our first peacock.
And we didn't really know what Wiley was going to do.
And now he is the royalty.
He is the king.
So when he is in full peacock mode with all of his feathers
fanned out so beautifully, our hearts are full.
And we're so proud of him.
He definitely reigns over this kingdom
that we call Tamerlane Sanctuary.
We hope that he'll be here for a very long time,
impressing all of our guests and making everyone happy.
