Hello, this is China Deep Dive. We have all the information you need to know about China at present. Today's topic is:
A video circulating on social media recently showas an explosion at BYD's super factory in Pingshan, Shenzhen, on the morning of April 14. The whistleblower claims the explosion has caused thousands of worker casualties. The CCP leader Xi Jinping dispatched high-ranking officials Wang Huning and Cai Qi, along with a special task force, to handle the situation. Meanwhile, rumors mentioned local communication restrictions and interference with some network signals. There were also reports that BYD founder Wang Chuanfu might be under house arrest or missing.
This claim quickly spread online.
Overseas Chinese media interviewed nearby residents who said the factory area had been conducting solid-state battery testing and that smoke was common.
BYD has already experienced two fires this month. On April 9th, a fire broke out suddenly at the BYD Fudi battery production base in Shengzhou, Shaoxing, Zhejiang.
Chinese media and BYD then stated that the area mainly stored test vehicles and scrapped vehicles. Their description was: On the morning of April 14th, a fire broke out and was extinguished that morning, with no casualties. The fire originated in a multi-story parking garage. These reports specifically emphasized that the fire was not directly related to the battery explosion.
