Part 2: Acryllic underpainting and imprimentura
Even look, you know.
I'll go to the center first; that's this here.
Well, here's the thing.
You know, I almost have to count them all, don't I.
Yes, that's a rose again.
That's a complicated thing, huh.
Yes, it has a very special anatomy.
And that's always what I'm working on, to get it right.
And you don't have a rose.
And is this acrylic?
Yes, this is acrylic paint.
I'll dilute that with water, huh.
That is always the distinction.
Previously it was tempera, but that was also a water-soluble paint.
That's what it'll become.
I also find this one quite nice.
I'm adding something to it.
Nice then.
Well, we've already done this nicely.
You can even put these ones in there yourself.
Now, a nice little thing this.
Something like that.
There they are, already standing there, the three of them.
Incredible.
At least a sketch, then.
Yes.
Yes, not easy.
No.
You're not getting it for free, I mean, right?
No, you must not let yourself down.
Yes, look.
Of course you're always a potential source of fun, naturally.
But you do want something, don't you?
You want something that you find beautiful yourself, don't you.
Yes, you want something that looks a bit like something else, right?
But you still have to work hard for that.
De Lely in Wording.
Yes.
It's a beautiful flower, isn't it.
What do you think is the hardest flower to paint, Kees?
Now, you know what it is.
To be honest, I don't find anything difficult at all.
What you see, that painter of yours, you really do see him as a professional, don't you?
As a form of craftsmanship.
Yes, why not.
It must just all make sense, after all.
I don't have anything to do with art or anything like that.
Yeah, right.
Would terms.
But I find that not to be terms that carve wood.
Someone's an artist, that's just how it is.
Show me what you're making.
Ultimately, of course, what I'm making is not a necessity of life.
Yes, but it is a great honor for me that you are willing to take the trouble to portray it in such a way.
Well then, it's my job.
Yes.
It is my privilege that you appreciate my work and say, "Well then, just make one for yourself."
Now, I also consider that an honor.
Yes.
Nice leaf.
Look at what a lovely pop it is, huh.
Yes, wonderful, John.
What's up?
Yes.
Yes, I'll see how exactly you'll come out of it later.
In any case, for the time being I have a construction.
Yes, you can actually see it growing, Kees.
The weights are distributed, right?
With things, then I'll show you why I'm doing this.
But I can only show it once I've completely finished it.
Look at those little lines over there.
Yes.
Now, I must do that, because soon I'll put on, as it's officially called, a seal of approval.
Yes.
And the imprimatura is a transparent brown layer that has been wiped with white.
Yes.
I can't paint on white.
No.
A half step.
Yes.
Between white and dark in.
And then I can go into the dark, even darker.
And I can go toward the light.
Ah, now I get it.
I can only get out on one side.
Yes.
That is a primer coat.
Everyone had that earlier.
But that has actually not been adhered to for a long time already.
So they don't even know the word anymore.
Modern painters work in completely different ways.
Yes.
They just start right away.
Yes.
How it feels and so on.
And I think it's perfectly fine, really.
Where are you going?
Apply the imprimatura.
Yes.
So it is a half step.
It is halfway between black and white.
Black is the darkest tone.
And white is the lightest.
And since I just have to do that with my flower arrangement, I must be able to do it.
All those gray values, the tone values, I have to manage them all.
And I can't do that, because if I start on white, I begin with the highest tone values.
I'll just go down there alone.
So that is actually not the intention.
I just need to be able to work halfway.
And then down and up.
Yes.
From dark to light.
Is this also acrylic?
Ah yes, still all of them.
Yes, okay.
Even with the upcoming detailing, everything will also be acrylic.
And then I get the last two layers of olive.
Now, that sounds easy, but it's not as easy as it seems.
You want it to be fair, right?
Yes.
It may be permissible to make exceptions, but in its entirety...
Yes.
...it must still give a fair impression.
The disadvantage is that it dries quickly.
So if I'm going over each other, then I just need to quickly get rid of those lines.
Otherwise, they would keep standing.
It's all rather tight, after all.
Yes, that seems to me too.
No, but I'm just thinking about the people I work with who come to my course.
Yes.
And then they see me working so quickly, and they think it's sloppy.
But that is not true.
I'm looking very secure.
That is the underpainting.
Yes.
It needs to dry, and that takes about an hour.
