The Sumerians said civilization began at Eridu. They said it in their king lists. They said it in their creation texts. They said it across multiple copies, multiple centuries, multiple cities. Kingship descended from heaven, and the kingship was in Eridu. That is not interpretation. That is their text.
When archaeologists finally excavated the site in 1946, they found that the Sumerians were telling the truth. Beneath a temple platform in southern Iraq, the team uncovered eighteen distinct levels of building stacked directly on top of each other — from a massive temple at the top to a three-meter room sitting on virgin sand at the bottom. That bottom room dates to approximately 5400 BCE. Seven thousand four hundred years ago. It is the first structure anyone ever built on that spot, and every level above it is slightly larger, slightly more complex, slightly more architecturally ambitious. The same location. The same orientation. Thirty-three centuries of continuous building. Nothing else in archaeology comes close.
The cemetery beside the temple contained a thousand burials with boat-shaped vessels as grave goods — connecting directly to the Sumerian tradition of Enki, god of fresh water, and the Apkallu, the fish-cloaked sages who supposedly brought knowledge to humanity at this exact location. The lowest temple levels contain large deposits of fish bones as offerings. The archaeology and the mythology point to the same spot.
The site has not been re-excavated since 1949. No radiocarbon dating. No DNA analysis. No ground-penetrating radar. The oldest urban cemetery in human history has never been studied with modern tools. The first city is still waiting.
