The Sumerian Giants They Erased From History

The Archaeology Mystery

The Sumerian texts describe a class of beings between the divine and the human — taller than ordinary people, serving as guardians of Anunnaki precincts, present before the flood and absent after it. The cubit measurements in the tablets convert to heights of six to ten feet for the guardian class, and up to eighteen feet for Gilgamesh himself. Leonard Woolley excavating the Royal Cemetery at Ur in the 1920s recorded skeletal remains with anomalous stature measurements, noted the anomaly in his field notes, and did not pursue it. The remains are in the Natural History Museum in London. The analysis has never been done.

I want to start with a measurement, not a legend, not a claim from a fringe website.
A measurement from an official excavation report published by mainstream archaeologists
sitting in the academic literature without adequate explanation.
At the Royal Cemetery of Ur, the same site where Queen Pwabi was found,
and from the excavation directed by Leonard Woolley between 1922 and 1934,
skeletal remains were recovered from several tombs whose dimensions exceeded anything in
the normal range for the contemporary Mesopotamian population.
Woolley noted the anomaly in his field notes. He recorded it.
Then the anomaly was absorbed into the broader publication of the excavation's findings,
without the specific question of what it meant being seriously pursued.
This is where I want to begin, not with mythology,
but with a measurement that is in the published record and that has not been adequately explained.
The Sumerian texts use a unit of measurement called the kush,
the cubit, as their standard measure of length.
One Sumerian cubit is approximately 49.5 centimeters, or just under half a meter.
Six cubits make one nindanu, the standard Sumerian unit for measuring human height
A normal Sumerian man in the texts is described as being approximately three nindanu,
that is three times six cubits, or 18 cubits total,
which converts to approximately 8.9 meters if taken literally.
In practice, the nindanu was used as a relative unit rather than an absolute one for living
beings, and what matters is the proportional relationship between described heights.
What the texts describe for the giant class is not three nindanu.
The figures associated with divine or semi-divine beings in the Sumerian
tradition are described in terms that, when converted through the cubit system,
produce heights the texts treat as extraordinary and distinguishing.
Gilgamesh, the most extensively described semi-divine figure in Sumerian literature,
described as two-thirds divine and one-third human,
is given physical dimensions in the epic that many scholars interpret as a height between 11
and 18 cubits. 11 Sumerian cubits converts to approximately 5.4 meters, or roughly 18 feet.
18 cubits converts to approximately 8.9 meters.
A figure the texts almost certainly intend is hyperbolic rather than literal,
in the same way that ancient literature across cultures
uses extreme physical description to convey divine stature.
Most researchers who treat this material seriously place Gilgamesh at the lower end of the scale,
approximately 5 to 6 meters, or 16 to 18 feet, understanding that the text
describes something genuinely extraordinary rather than making a precise anatomical claim.
Anunnaki are described in the texts as significantly taller than the human norm,
approximately 4 to 5 meters, or 13 to 16 feet, when the cubit measurements are converted.
These figures come from texts that were not written as anatomical records and should not
be read as such. What they show instead is a consistent physical distinction between the
divine class and the human population, a distinction that they treat as visible,
significant, and practically relevant to how these beings were recognized
and how they interacted with humans. Guardian class figures, the beings at the human divine
boundary and the offspring of divine fathers and human mothers, are described as intermediate in
height. They are not as tall as the Anunnaki, but they are significantly taller than ordinary humans.
The cubit measurements in the relevant passages place this class at approximately 2 to 3 meters,
6 to 10 feet, which is extraordinary by the standards of any normal human population,
but considerably less extreme than the full Anunnaki descriptions.
This is the class whose skeletal remains I believe Woolley was measuring at Ur. It is not
the full Anunnaki scale, which belongs to a different order of being entirely. The guardian
class, the boundary beings, the Nephilim in later Hebrew terminology. The physical height described
in the Sumerian texts for this class is consistent with the skeletal anomalies Woolley documented,
but did not pursue. Now, I want to address the textual tradition for this class specifically,
because the popular treatment of it tends to collapse everything into a single category of
giants when the Sumerian tradition is considerably more structured than that.
The Atrahasis epic describes the pre-flood world as containing a population that included
beings of mixed origin, divine, and human lineage combined in individuals whose physical form
reflected both. The Sumerian texts are not describing a single race of giants. They are
describing a spectrum. At the top, the Anunnaki, whose described dimensions suggest heights of 4
to 5 meters or more. In the middle, the guardian class, semi-divine, physically larger than ordinary
humans, serving as the physical interface between Anunnaki authority and human society.
At the base, ordinary humans, the lulu amelu, the primitive worker, created to serve, whose described
dimensions match archaeological populations. The guardian class in the texts has specific functions.
They enforce. They guard. They are the beings the Anunnaki deploy when physical authority needs to
be expressed in the human world. They are described as warriors, as protectors of divine precincts,
as the beings ordinary humans encounter when they approach the boundaries of Anunnaki territory.
The scorpion men of Mount Mashu, half human and half divine in their hybrid constitution,
belong to this class. The beings who guard the cedar forest in the Gilgamesh epic belong to this
class. The Anunnaki council does not personally manage the physical perimeter of its operations.
It delegates that to a class of beings capable of the physical authority the role requires.
A height of 2 to 3 meters or 6 to 10 feet would provide that authority in any human context.
An ordinary person encountering a guardian at the gate of a divine precinct would be facing someone
at least a head and shoulders and more above them, physically imposing in ways that require no
supernatural explanation, whose presence alone would communicate the distinction between ordinary
human space and divine territory. This is not mythology. This is security architecture.
The Anunnaki built their precincts with guardians whose physical presence was itself a deterrent.
The texts describe this as a functional reality, not a symbolic one. Now I want to go to the
physical evidence because the textual tradition is important, but the physical record is where
the question becomes genuinely difficult to dismiss. Woolley's excavations at Ur produced
skeletal material that was sent to the Natural History Museum in London for analysis.
The general physical characteristics of the Ur population were documented.
What the published literature has consistently not addressed is the subset of remains that showed
anomalous stature measurements. The question of whether the anomalously tall individuals from the
Royal Cemetery represent a distinct physical subpopulation within Ur has not been formally
investigated using modern skeletal analysis methods. Modern osteological analysis, the study
of skeletal remains, can answer questions about population substructure, about whether a group
of individuals represents a distinct biological cohort, or simply natural variation within a single
population. The techniques exist. The remains are in the Natural History Museum. The question
has not been asked. The Tel Es-Safi excavations in Israel, identified by many scholars as the
biblical Gath, the city of Goliath, produced skeletal material in the late 2000s that
prompted renewed academic discussion of the textual tradition of giant warriors in the
Near East. The excavation team was careful in their published statements, noting that the evidence
was suggestive rather than conclusive. But the fact that mainstream archaeologists at that
excavation were discussing this question in an academic context signals that it is not as settled
as the popular presentation assumes. The Hebrew tradition describes Goliath of Gath as six cubits
and a span approximately three meters or just under 10 feet using the standard Hebrew cubit of
approximately 44.5 centimeters. This is precisely the height range described in the Sumerian
texts for the guardian class. Not the Annunaki scale, but the intermediate scale. The beings at the
human divine boundary whose physical size distinguished them from the ordinary population
without placing them in the fully divine category. Og of Bashan, whose iron bed was nine cubits long
and four cubits wide, approximately four meters by 1.8 meters, appears in three separate books
of the Hebrew Bible as an identified individual. His bed dimensions are recorded with the precision
of an inventory. The territory he ruled is identified. The campaign to defeat him is
described as a military operation of specific tactical significance. He is not embedded in
theological allegory. He is presented as a historical king whose physical size was remarkable
enough to warrant documentation. The Sumerian texts place the origin of this class in the pre-flood
world. The Hebrew texts describe their remnants persisting into the historical period. They are
geographically contained in specific territories, Bashan, Canaan, and the regions east of the Jordan,
and they were systematically eliminated by the cultures that encountered them.
The sequence matches the Sumerian account of Enlil deliberately reducing the presence of the
giant class after the flood while not fully eliminating it. After the flood, the texts
describe a deliberate engineering of a reduced, shorter-lived, and less physically capable humanity.
A population that had included beings 2 to 3 meters tall, 6 to 10 feet, serving as guardians
and enforcers, was replaced by a population whose described physical characteristics matched the
normal range of Bronze Age human remains found across the region. The guardian class did not
gradually decline. The texts describe their removal as intentional, and the post-flood
world is designed without them as a general feature of the human population. The Sumerian
medical texts describe surgical procedures with anatomical precision. The astronomical texts
contain calculations verified by modern computers. The mathematical system they used governs every
clock in the world. The Kunga breeding program has been confirmed in peer-reviewed journals.
When the Sumerians described something as real and specific, they were generally describing
something real and specific. They described a class of beings 2 to 3 meters tall, serving as
guardians of Anunnaki precincts. They gave those beings specific dimensions in a measurement system
we can convert. They described the pre-flood world as containing them, and the post-flood
world as engineered without them. Woolley found something at Ur that he noted and did not pursue.
The remains are in London. The cubit measurements in the texts convert to heights between 6 and 10
feet for the guardian class. The skeletal anomalies, Woolley documented without explanation, fall in
that range. The analysis has not been done. The measurement is in the field notes. The remains
are in the museum. The texts give us the expected height range in a unit system we can verify.
What we are waiting for is someone willing to ask the question that all three of these
datasets, taken together, are clearly raising.
