Welcome back to Wall Street Decoded. I'm Elise. In today's podcast episode, April 21, 2026,
we will examine U.S. energy dominance, signs of exhaustion in the stock market rally,
and the great structural reset in defense and AI. And here are the telling figures.
The U.S. has redrawn the global energy map, mastering most of the world's energy choke
points. This represents an unprecedented shift in the balance of power on the global energy map.
The first number you need to know, the United States is currently pumping 13.6 million barrels
of crude oil per day, decisively beating Russia, 9.1 million barrels, and Saudi Arabia,
nine. Three million barrels to become the world's number one producer. In terms of natural gas,
the U.S. is completely unrivaled, reaching a record 43.2 trillion cubic feet in 2025
and commanding 25% of the global supply. Not only is the U.S. the largest producer,
but it has also just signed a defense agreement with Morocco, officially securing control over
four of the world's most critical maritime choke points, Gibraltar, Malacca, the Strait of Hormuz,
and the Panama Canal. Concurrently, the two-week ceasefire in Iran is set to expire,
and President Trump has stated it is highly unlikely to be extended.
This absolute projection of power has allowed global markets to breathe a sigh of relief.
Brent crude prices immediately fell by 0.6% to $94.94 per barrel, driven by expectations that
diplomatic efforts will soon resolve the Strait of Hormuz issue. For Iran, the economic toll is
devastating. The country's economy is burning through more than $400 million a day due to its
inability to sell oil and severe shortages of imported goods. This exhaustion has forced them
to the negotiating table in Pakistan from an incredibly weak position. Two, a warning from
Wall Street. FOMO flows show signs of exhaustion in this mini-cycle turning to the equities market.
Although the MSCI All-Country World Index edged up slightly by 0.1%,
a warning was issued by Goldman Sachs' strategy team. Positioning and sentiment dynamics are
largely exhausted. CNN's Fear and Greed Index surged from a bottom of 9 to over 60.
Commodity trading advisors, CTA Funds, poured a massive $86 billion into the market just last
hit 55.8%, placing it in the 67th percentile. CTA Funds are trend-following investment vehicles
that utilize automated algorithms and technical indicators, such as MACD and Bollinger Bands,
to trade futures contracts, forex, and cryptocurrencies. Often referred to as
trend-following bots, they execute highly automated trading strategies to optimize returns
based on price and volume trends. Furthermore, the earnings growth of the broader S&P 500 Index
is coming under scrutiny, as Micron technology alone accounted for more than half of the
market's upward earnings revisions. This is a classic hallmark of a bull trap.
With all systematic and speculative flows already pushed into the market,
there are no marginal buyers left. There is a high probability of a significant month-end
portfolio rebalancing, pulling capital out of equities and shifting it into bonds,
effectively capping the top of this short-term cycle.
3. The Structural Reset
Defense, green energy, and the era of easy globalization is over. Global markets are
fragmenting and entering a cycle that prioritizes national security above all else.
The European defense sector is experiencing a massive boom. The MSCI Europe Aerospace and
Defense Index has surged approximately 35% over the past year. Even more remarkably,
shares of Exail Technologies, a French manufacturer of mine-clearing drones,
have skyrocketed 600% since the beginning of 2025.
A massive catalyst for this momentum is Germany's 500 billion infrastructure package.
Meanwhile, AI remains a cash cow. Amazon just injected another $5 billion into Anthropic,
and Victory Giant, an Nvidia supplier, jumped 57% on its first day of trading in Hong Kong's
largest IPO in seven months. Consequently, old-economy stocks such as materials,
energy, and industrial power, serving AI data centers, are set to reign supreme.
A Goldman Sachs renewable energy stock basket has recorded a 75% gain. Investors are compelled
to allocate capital to commodities and core infrastructure builders if they do not want
to be left behind. 4. Gold and Currencies
Safe havens in a fragmented era finally, let's look at the currency markets. The US dollar index
DX ticked up 0.1%, while the USD-JPY pair threatens to break the 1.590 resistance level.
Notably, gold has corrected lower 0.5%, dropping below $4,800 per ounce.
According to Axel Merck, manager of a $4.2 billion fund, gold's short-term pause is due
to rising real interest rates as surging oil prices drive up borrowing costs. However,
in the long term, the weaponization of the US dollar and the trend of printing money to finance
fiscal deficits and defense spending will create an unstoppable structural advantage for gold.
Any geopolitical shock will force government intervention, which inherently benefits safe
haven assets like gold. We are living in an era where energy dominance and geopolitics dictate
the trajectory of every chart. Profits are found in artificial intelligence, national defense,
and infrastructure. But short-term bubble risks loom large as liquidity dries up.
Brace yourselves for the volatility.
