Hey everybody, we're back with the star of Mother Mary, Anne Hathaway.
You play a pop star opposite Michaela Cole, who plays your best friend and a wardrobe, a costume designer.
Yeah, she's a fashion designer and she's my best friend and former image architect.
Okay, so tell us a little bit more about what it's about.
Well, so my character, who has been kind of one of the dominant pop presences for the last 20 years in the world.
So she's like a Lady Gaga kind of thing?
We were inspired by so many people. We wanted Mother Mary to be her own thing.
But we listened to Beyonce, Gaga, Rosalia, we listened to Taylor Swift, of course, Lorde.
You know, all of these amazing, but also James Blake and Nine Inch Nails.
So there were all these different elements that went into her.
And yeah, so she had an accident a few years ago and has gone back to her former best friend to basically ask her to make her a dress.
But it's more than a dress. She's asking for an identity.
She's asking for healing. She's asking for absolution for the wrong that she's done.
And Michaela Cole has one of the greatest acting turns I have seen in a very long time,
torturing me about whether or not she's going to make me this dress.
We have a clip here. What do I need to know about this clip?
This is the beginning of the movie. This is Mother Mary at the height of her power,
singing an original song by Charlie XCX and Jack Antonoff called Burial.
Move on.
So sweetly, kindly, I'm mesmerizing. It's terrifying.
This black suit fits like a glove, I was born to be the one I thought.
Won't lose myself to a touch, I was born to be the one I thought.
This black suit fits like a glove, I was born to be the one I thought.
My red heart free like a dove, but you told me that it's never enough.
This is your burial.
I see a lot of influences in it. The Beyonce, Nimbus, like the crown.
That's there.
Wait, are you a secret pop fan?
I just saw Gaga's last Monster Ball show on Monday. I'm still vibrating.
That's amazing!
Anyway, I understand you mentioned Taylor Swift, but how did she influence this?
She was just kind of like an angel that I felt was over our heads all the time.
David Lowery is a huge Swiftie and he was really influenced by the Reputation tour
for all of the concert scenes.
And then I was really influenced by her tour film Miss Americana
and how vulnerable she just let herself be in that.
Pop stars who we're so used to seeing, so in their power and so polished.
What happens when they're in between moments, when they're having a moment of metamorphosis,
which can be so painful.
And what happens when you're a really public person
and you're still trying to figure things out in the spotlight.
I was already a fan, but after that I just had so much empathy for her
and her humanity and of course her talent.
Do you guys hang at all?
We do know each other, yeah.
Yeah, we do.
So we filmed this movie in Germany over the course of a few years
and when we finished the concert portion of the film, which was the second year,
we were in Bonn, Germany and Taylor was finishing up Eris in Gelsenkirchen,
which I know we've all been to.
She did three nights in Gelsenkirchen and I got tickets.
And so me and my family, we went and it was amazing.
She came out on stage and it was just like the whole place exploded.
And she just makes the audience feel so loved and she made me feel so loved.
And I'm like, oh my God, Annie, you're so cute.
You think Taylor Swift's waving at you right now.
I'm like, you're so adorable.
And then somebody tapped me on the shoulder and they said,
Taylor wants you to have this.
And I went, what is happening?
And I opened it and it was a note where Taylor said, I'm so happy you're here.
I'm going to be enthusiastically waving at you.
And I was like, oh my God, she's so magical.
She did.
She did the thing.
And I was right.
I am special.
Right.
You can safely assume that everyone is waving at you.
Thank you so much for being here.
Thank you for having me.
