Tensions are rising between China and New Zealand, two countries separated by roughly 6,000 miles. Beijing protested to New Zealand on Friday over what it calls repeated military surveillance flights near its airspace. The reason behind New Zealand's move has not been publicly disclosed. China claims a New Zealand Air Force patrol aircraft conducted multiple close-range reconnaissance missions over the Yellow Sea and East China Sea. The waters lie between China, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea and are international waters. China says the flights continued despite warnings from its authorities. New Zealand did not explain why it deployed an aircraft from thousands of miles away to waters near China. But Beijing has done something similar repeatedly to New Zealand over the years. Just last year, New Zealand warned that quote extremely capable Chinese military ships had been spotted in the Tasman Sea, which lies between Australia and New Zealand. Countering China's military threats, New Zealand is said to spend billions on defense in the coming years.
