Taylor, thank you for joining me on British Slang.
Thank you for joining me.
What's some British slang you've learned since living in the UK?
Okay, some of my favourites are cup of rosy, chuffed, knackered, gutted, taking the piss,
have a kip, well fit, I love it when somebody says somebody's a well fit, wanker.
Yeah, you guys are really fun.
It's about to be your birthday.
It is.
How excited are you about your next decade?
I'm really excited about it.
I've heard really good things about your 30s.
Feeling a bit more secure, a bit.
Just a bit.
This much.
But you've achieved so much in your 20s.
20s were really, really fun, but I also sort of equate my 20s to like
walking into a costume shop and trying on all these different costumes
and then like walking out of the costume shop in my regular outfit and being like,
I'm cool with who I am.
I'm really excited about 30.
Now I get to choose when I work.
I get to choose the things I want to work on and I don't take that for granted ever
because there were times when I played, you know, hundreds of shows in a year
and I was like 17 years old and I would get exhausted and burnt out and
now I can work the amount that I know I'm capable of handling,
which is like an extreme luxury.
I know that.
I started really young, like here at 16.
When you're that age, you just want to just please.
I would never like listen to you saying that and be like, oh, what a flaw.
It's only a flaw when you make people pleasing a part of your personality
so much so that you don't really know what is your opinion
and what is the influence of all these other things.
One thing going into my 30s that I'm really stoked about is like,
I now can really recognize and diagnose like toxic messages being sent to me
by society, by culture, about like my body.
Like I'm a woman.
I'm not a coat hanger.
I need to feel healthy in my life and I need to take pleasure in food
and I need to not use my body as like an exercise of control
when I feel out of control in my life.
Some body positivity.
Yeah.
What's your favorite lyric you've ever written?
From the new album Lover, I'm liking the lyric
with every guitar string scar on my hand,
I take this magnetic force of a man to be my lover.
Wow.
I was thinking about how like I've written all these songs on guitar
and I've played guitar until my fingers have bled
and I've written songs about letdowns and heartbreak and struggle.
So the idea that you could take all of the bad things that happen to you
and you could use that as appreciation for good things that happen to you
and really cherish them because you've experienced like a breakup song or two.
Wow, that's deep.
What advice would you give to young women trying to make it in your industry today?
I would say it's important to know that you are damned if you do
and you're damned if you don't.
There is a negative connotation or a ridiculous accusation
or a rude stereotype that can be hurled at a woman for doing anything or not doing anything.
So focus on your idea of right and wrong,
your idea of who you should be,
your idea of what's cool,
not everyone else's because it's never all going to match up.
Yeah.
Thank you so much Taylor for the most brilliant day here with us at British Vogue.
I can't wait for people to see the shits, the interviews.
You're the best.
No, we always have.
I want to have a kid.
Have a kid, yeah, because you're knackered.
