Easy Knitted Baby Blanket - Hygge Cozy and Warm

Hello, I'm Crafty Patty and thank you for stopping by. We are going to be doing another knitting project. Why do I keep throwing more knitting at you? Because it's just so popular right now. It's the rage. Everybody's doing it. It's not for this little old grannies like me. It's for young people, movie stars. It's just because it's so relaxing. It's meditative and at the end of all your wonderful knitting that you're doing at nighttime or by the TV or whatever you're doing, you get a finished project at the end. This particular one is you might have seen if you've watched my channel. This was the blanket scarf and so it's just knitted so wide it just hangs over the shoulders and it's so cozy to have when you're watching TV or whatever you're doing. Now I have three extra balls here. I thought what should I do with those? Well my daughter just happens to be having a baby very soon and so what I would like to do is give her this blanket scarf and then the baby a little soft blanket so they'll have a matching set. I just thought that would be so cute for mom and for baby. So I'm going to knit up a blanket using the same pattern I used here and it will be a lovely cute matching set and the only difference from this to our blanket is we'll be casting even more stitches but this time we use circular needles only so we can have enough room to hold all the stitches so we're not knitting in the circle. Don't worry about that part. And as always the supply list and any links will be in the description box below this video as well as the full written note pattern for the blanket. All right so let's get started. And same as the blanket scarf I am using the Red Heart the hookah yarn. This one actually has 212 yards 194 meters in it and this is a bulky 5 and like I mentioned I am using the US 11 8 millimeter circular needles. I have pulled out approximately two yards of yarn because that's what we're going to be using for a long tail cast on and I find a long tail cast on works better for a bulky yarn. And here's the two yards I've pulled out so from that point there we're going to make our slip knot. So I'm just going to wrap around form a little X and that yarn comes up through that hole. You can use your thumb to pull it out then remove your fingers grabbing both pieces of yarn pull down and you've made your slip knot. Let's pop that on our needle and just slip it up if you have a yarn winder like this. And here's the yarn winder and that's what I made the yarn cake with and I do have a video on how to use the yarn winder and I will leave all those links as well as any supplies always in the description box below this video. You can form it into yarn cakes or you can take it from the inside of your ball. I just find that this prevents tangles a lot more if you've never done a long tail cast on then keep watching. I like to have good tension so I'm wrapping around my baby finger and I'm using this so it's easier to do my long tail cast on. So I'm just going to turn this around so that's coming off the left my yarn from the ball's coming on the right. So the easiest way I find to teach people to do a long tail cast on is hold your yarn and your fingers like this and then the thumb is going to hit on top of the yarn and you're just going to do a little turn around like so. You're going to pop it into the needle hold on with your left wrap around with your right and then that loop comes over the top of needle like so. Let's do that again wrap around needle comes in the loop on your thumb wrap around the needle and the loop comes over. Okay hope you've got that and that's what I have left over from the two yarns that I pulled out to do the 80 stitches for my cast on just so you know. And we're going to be doing just a plain knit border so let's just do all knits across our whole first row. So I'm not sure in case you haven't ever done knitting before I'll go slower yarn around and then off the needle. Do a few more knits for you on the slower side. Okay so all knits across the whole row and we'll see you at the end. And the last two stitches through that first row of all knits. So I'm just going to transfer so now we have the other needle we're going to come back in and we're going to do all knit row again. And now starting the second row of all knit this is our bottom border and you can knit as many rows as you want for your border. There will be four rows to complete our broken rib pattern and the first row just happens to be all knit again. So let's knit one more row just all plain knits just like the border. So we'll do all knits and I'll see you at the end. And the last two stitches of our first row of our pattern which was all knits and now turn in your work and let's do row two. And now we're going to be starting row two of our pattern but being that we want to do a left and right border we want to do some border stitches. So I'm going to have my first three stitches all knit and that will create my border. So three stitches just knit and now we start our pattern. And the pattern for the second row is going to be knit one purl one. So we're going to come in we're going to knit one and purl one. Now if you've never done that purl I'll go a little slower in the next one. Take it back again first stitch is a knit, purl we got to bring our yarn to the front of our needle and we're going to go into the front of our stitch wrap around and that's our purl. And we have to go back bring our yarn to the back again to form our knit stitch. Knit and to the front again into the front of the needle wrap around and purl and always remembering to bring your yarn to the back to do your knit stitch again. Okay so you're going to knit one purl one all the way to your last three stitches which will be three knit to form the other side of your border and I will see you there. And here we're coming to the end of our row two. Here's four stitches left we've just done a knit it's a purl and our last three stitches because we want to have a border on the other side is all knit stitches. And that completes row two. Row three is super easy because it's all knit stitches again so you don't have to worry about your three border stitches because they're going to be knits anyways. So all you're going to do is knit this whole row and we'll see you at the end. And here we are at the end of row three and you don't have to worry about your borders because they're all knit stitches anyways which is the same as your border. And now we're ready for row four. And row four always with your three border stitches and this time we're going to start with a purl. So we go yarn forward, purl, yarn back and knit. And that's all you do across the whole row. Purl one and knit one all the way until you get the last three stitches which of course will be three knits. If you lose track of where you are and you're not sure if it's a purl or a knit you can tell your purls have got a horizontal bar here and your knits have got the V coming down. Here's your bar, here's your V, here's your bar. Okay so I know that I've got purl, knit, purl so I know my next stitch is a knit. And here we are at the end of the row. This is a purl and you do have a knit to finish off that pattern. And then we still have three more knits to do for the border. And now you've completed your pattern rows one to four. So you're just going to turn it all around and repeat rows one to four. I've used one ball of yarn so I just want to let you know where I'm at. Those 80 stitches I cast on are giving me about 32 inches using this hookah yarn. 32 inches is approximately 81.3 centimeters and I'm getting about 13 and oh let's say just 13 and a half inches in length which is about 34.3 centimeters. So I'm now going to join my next ball of yarn and we'll continue on. And I'm going to show you a fun way to join two pieces of yarn. We've got this one coming off our new ball and this is coming off our project. This one on the top, this one on the bottom. Let's take the one on the bottom, we're going to pass it over the one on the top. We're going to bring that yarn underneath both of those strands and then that end is going to come through the loop. And you've basically just made a simple knot. So let's close that up. There's one knot. Let's do the same thing for this side. We're going to now pass the top yarn over the bottom yarn, bring it underneath both pieces of yarn and then through the loop. And then you can tighten that one. Then all you do is you grab the tails but the longer pieces of yarn and you pull it together. So I'm just going to give it an extra tight squeeze on both of those knots and then one last pull together to make sure it's good and secure. And then it's just a matter of cutting off those little tails and you're ready to go with more yarn. There you go. And then the bulky yarn, this will hide away quite nicely and you don't have any end to weave in later. I've now added my third ball of yarn and being that I'm about 32 inches in width, I think I'll go about 36 in length. So I'm going to knit about 20 more rows until I'm approximately 35 inches and then we'll do our top border. So I will carry on and knit my four rows. And you certainly don't have to watch this because we know how to do our knit stitches now. And then I'll get back to you when we're ready to cast off. We'll see you there. I've finished my four rows of all knit for my top border and now we're just going to do a nice loose cast off. And as always, we knit the first one, we knit the second one, and the first one comes over the second one. And we continue along a whole row. Let's do one more. I'm sure you've got it. Knit, taking the first one over the next one and continue on and I'll see you at the end. And finesse, cast off. And with a stitch and then cut off your yarn. Yes, there you go. And you are done. You just have to sew in your end and a nice large eyed needle end. Darning needle, pulling it off and that will be easy to now thread that bulky yarn through the eye and just do a nice little weave back and forth. Back down, up and down. And once I've gone one way, give it a tug so you're not distorting it. And then just come back through the other way. You're going to come through and that just helps to lock it in a bit. And that's all the way back. There we go. And do the same for your other end. And here's the right side how it looks for the broken rib knitting. And it's almost like you can see lines or little diamond shapes. It's very pretty and very easy to do. So this is the correct side. And even the back side looks beautiful too.
