For the first time in more than seven years, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will arrive
down under for a whirlwind Aussie tour. But the landscape is very different this time around and
of course they'll be travelling as non-royals. For more we are joined this morning by Daily Mirror
Royal Editor Rusty Myers in the UK. Rusty, I don't think, I don't know whether you heard
Carl there, he's one of those who is absolutely enraptured with this visit like so many of us are.
Oh I did hear him and I wouldn't expect anything less. But listen, I think there are a few people
looking forward to it. Meghan and Harry obviously split people down the line whenever they come to
town. But this is very interesting, I was looking at the schedule and it is pretty much, if you were
looking at a box ticking exercise to look at a royal tour, well this is exactly what you would
get. We're going to see Harry and Meghan across cities, Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney, they're
hopping on boats, doing a mental health exercise, going to a women's and family refuge and also
going to a children's hospital as well. But I'm told there'll be no opportunities for members of
the public to meet them apart from Meghan's very, very expensive three-day sort of extravaganza
with the Coogee five-star beach hotel which is costing people an awful lot of money. Well this
is the thing right, I mean obviously their pursuits, we well know them and they are noble
causes that they're supporting which we all want to support too right. But the issue here is that
you know travelling this time not as royals but as private citizens is actually costing the taxpayer
money despite the private security that they're going to have with them as well. This is a big
money-making exercise for them yet they still haven't sold out their ticketed events which as
you just foreshadowed some of them costing thousands of dollars. Yeah nearly four thousand
dollars just to meet Meghan Markle in a five-star hotel. I mean and there's been some issues around
that as well because they've banned a journalist last week who had managed to get a ticket. She said
she wanted just to attend as a regular punter. The organisers said that she wasn't allowed in.
Also the security issue is a big, big deal because Meghan and Harry's team have said that absolutely
nobody is going to carry the can for this. We're not going to be expecting taxpayers to fork out
any kind of money and yet that is not true. Of course taxpayers will be paying for the police
protection wherever they are. Of course Harry is still in line to the throne and they're still
members of the royal family even though they're not working. So I think that Meghan and Harry have
got a lot to answer to for this and let's just see how popular it is because it's certainly a
busy schedule over the next few days. Well what will the measure of success be Rusty? Well I think
you look at it and it's definitely sort of an altruistic part of the events going to Children's
Women's Refuge as I said. But make no mistake that this is for commercial endeavours as well
because Meghan Markle is trying to push her as ever brand. She's just split up from Netflix saying
that they were holding her back. Read into that what you will. I think there was some sort of
issue with somebody who has made an awful lot of money and very much successful like Netflix. But
you know this is sort of a soft launch before she possibly pushes it into Europe. So
look at you. Lucky Aussie. So you'll get the first chance to bumble it after America. Who
needs Netflix when you've got jam? Hey? Well of course. Jam and flower sprinkles. What more do
you want? Have you tried it incidentally? I have tried the wine actually and I'm not a rosé drinker
let's just say that. Very very kind of you. Very diplomatic. Rusty thanks so much for joining us
this morning. Appreciate it. Thanks guys.
