Another gorgeous fall morning on the farm means chores, critters and surprises! We start the day under a blue sky as the cat narrowly avoids being run over. When I try to empty the grain dryer I find the front column jammed… and discover a bird’s nest and feathers hidden inside! After cleaning out the dryer and climbing up top, I spot the neighbors putting in drain tile across our fields — thank you local guys for improving our drainage. Onyx is busy doing tillage with the Mando Storm while I tackle my least‑favorite job: blowing off TWO combines. As every farmer knows, bean dust is one of the devil’s tools, and the fine powder gets everywhere! We pull the shields, run the machines to loosen grain and chaff, and do our best to keep moisture and mice out over winter. The dog sticks around for company as we work. In the evening we clean the chicken coop and spread fresh wood chips to keep the hens comfortable. It’s messy but satisfying work that keeps our equipment running and our animals happy.
