Chinese company Unix AI has put Panther into operation, a wheeled domestic humanoid robot that, according to the company, is the world's first to genuinely function in ordinary homes, carrying out chained tasks such as preparing meals, opening curtains, cleaning spaces and organising objects. Standing 1.60 metres tall, with two bionic arms featuring eight degrees of freedom each, depth cameras, LiDAR and an array of six microphones for voice interaction, Panther operates for up to 16 hours on a single charge and navigates indoor spaces with millimetric precision, thanks to an omnidirectional wheeled base — a technical choice that prioritises stability and energy efficiency at the expense of the ability to climb stairs. The announcement, made at the end of March 2026, comes in a context of broad Chinese dominance in the sector: according to research firm Omdia, around 90% of humanoid robots sold globally in 2025 were produced by Chinese companies, with Unitree and Agibot leading worldwide sales — while Tesla, Figure AI and Agility Robotics, the main American competitors, sold a combined total of around 450 units. Panther is powered by a proprietary software architecture that combines imitation learning, tactile-visual perception and long-term planning to transform simple commands into autonomous workflows; but experts warn that the great challenge has yet to be overcome: real domestic environments — with children, animals and misplaced objects — are significantly more unpredictable than laboratories, and questions around privacy, data security and the regulation of camera-equipped robots in private homes still lack clear answers from the industry and governments.
