Authentic BENGALI Thali with 8 ITEMS!! West Bengali FISH THALI Kolkata, India
You haven’t truly traveled until you’ve experienced the wonders of India for yourself. This country is not only one of the most populous in the world, it’s also one of the most diverse in terms of culture, food, religion, languages, and geography. It really is a world within a world. Each time I visit, I learn and see new things that surprise me and experience flavors I never knew existed. This amazing country has my heart and I can’t wait to go back!
With just a handful of hours left in my two-week-long third trip to India, I headed out on one last adventure after arriving in the City of Joy, Kolkata. I was staying in the New Market area for just 8 hours or so, so I had time to head out and get a tasty Bengali thali at Kasturi Restaurant. I didn’t have a Bengali thali the first time I visited the city just four months earlier, so I couldn’t wait to dive in!
New Market is fun, chaotic, and such a sensory overload! I arrived at the restaurant and ordered my thali. There’s a bit of a language barrier sometimes, but it’s still great to interact with the locals and immerse yourself in the culture. I love visiting places where I don’t speak the language!
My thali arrived. It didn’t come on a traditional platter and instead consisted of eight different serving containers. The dishes included prawns, fish, veggies, rice, and potatoes. Just remember, when in India, always wash your hands before you eat.
I started with the prawns. I separated the shell and dove in. The curry on it was delicious and creamy and the prawns were huge and succulent. It was so fantastic! It reminded me of a butter chicken curry and had a nice kick to it!
Remember, only use one hand when eating in India. If you use two, you’re doing it wrong.
I even sucked the brains out of the prawns. It was so unreal! Then I went for the aloo curry, which was so flavorful. It was like potatoes with eggs. The potatoes were perfect cubes and the curry was super creamy with no spice. They were fantastic!
Then, I tried the fish, which I opened up. I picked it apart so I wouldn’t get any bones or spines. I loved it! It was so buttery and fell apart in my mouth. The way I picked it apart, there were no bones and there was so much meat! This was the best fish I’d had in a while! The fish I had in Assam was so bony I could barely eat it. I cleaned the bones on this one, though!
Then I added rice to the fish curry. I had to be careful just in case there were bones in the curry. Next was the vegetables, which were herbs and potatoes. It looked like fern, spinach, and charred potatoes. It was so good. My wife would love this dish!
Next was another fish cake with breading. Unfortunately, there were a lot of bones in it, so I had to pass on it. Then I went with the eggplant with tiny prawns, which was very different. It was a yummy eggplant mash and was so flavorful!
Then I went with another breaded crust with fish inside. I picked it apart and tried it. There were no bones; it was like a perfect filet! It tasted like thick flounder and was much better than the other one! It was also a little spicy and had like a bread pudding crust. So good! I think I found my favorite fish dish in all of India!
Last was fish with herbs. There were so many bones in it, so I finished up with some more veggies instead. My favorite dish was definitely the prawns! My total came to 1,465 rupees, or about $21.
Then I headed back out into New Market. It was nuts! Unfortunately, I couldn’t meet up with my friend Navpreet due to an emergency, so I headed to Blue Sky Café to have flamed chocolate pudding. It was actually lit on fire!
It’s a thick, chocolate pudding and the fire eventually goes out. It definitely contained alcohol and reminded me of the chocolate pudding from my childhood! It was good and really different. Even after the flame went out, it was still super hot. It costs 120 rupees, or about $1.73 U.S.
Right outside the Blue Sky Café was a miniature shrine to a god. It was really beautiful!
I hope you enjoyed my quick thali meal and dessert in Kolkata’s New Market! If you did, please give it a thumbs up and leave me a comment. Also, please subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss any of my upcoming travel/food content!
