FRESH Chinese HOT POT FEAST at the Holy Cow - 10 Cuts and Sauces | Shanghai, China

After I visited the Chinese cities of Shanghai, Beijing, and Xi’an with my father in 2015, I knew I wanted to go back. I got the chance in April of 2019, when Renault hired me for a one-day job. I extended my trip to 12 days and spent 11 of them exploring the cities of Shanghai, Suzhou, and Hangzhou. There, I experienced incredible food, wonderful people, beautiful temples and gardens, and mind-blowing history. I can’t wait to share it all with you in this China series!

After I arrived back in Shanghai via bullet train from Suzhou earlier on my fifth day in China, I headed over to The Holy Cow to have a delicious hot pot dinner. This place is famous for its fresh meat, pesticide-free vegetables, and flavorful and nutrient-rich broths. The broths range from plain to spicy and there are over 20 different sauces!

I met up with the owner of The Holy Cow, Anthony, who explained to me that they like to use the whole cow and the meat is never frozen. He told me they also use organ meats, which I love!

Then, I got to watch Anthony make his own signature sauce. Then I made my own with some chili paste, Holy Cow sauce, chilies, sesame peanut, and cilantro. It was very different from Anthony’s!

I started with a craft beer called Zero, which is half-wheat, half-lager, and locally-sourced. It was very light and had a different taste. It had a wheat kick and a light lager taste.

I was given a private room. Anthony ordered 14 different things for me, including meatballs, lots of vegetables, dumplings, different cuts of meat, and more. Anthony started by cooking the meat and serving me. Then I dipped the meat into my sauce, which was spicy and sweet. The meat had a different texture because it had never been frozen. It was amazing!

Then I tried some of the meat cooked in the spicy broth. It was a little spicy, but the flavor was out of control! Anthony’s sauce was the best!

Then I went with some beef dumplings, which were incredible. Next, some venison from New Zealand was brought to our table.

My next dish was cow shoulder. It was so tender and so amazing with Anthony’s sauce. I went back to my sauce for a second before I tried the meatball. It was beef, but tasted like lamb!

Then I was brought a liter of dark beer! I tried the free-range venison from New Zealand at first. It tasted more earthy because it’s higher in iron. There was also no fat on it, so it was super clean!

The beer was amazing, too. It had an almost cinnamon-like taste!

Next, it was time for the cow stomach, which was gelatinous and spongy. I tried it with a sauce with sesame seeds. Then I tried the golden needle mushrooms, which I also loved! The spicy stomach by itself was hot, so I calmed it down with Anthony’s sauce. It tasted like chewy bacon!

Next was another cut of venison, which was so fantastic. Then I tried a fattier piece of cow. I love fatty meat! Then we tried some blood, which cooked for a while. It looked like liver that had been cut into rectangles. It didn’t taste like liver, though!

Tofu skin was next, which was a huge piece I ate in one bite. It was fried, so it tasted different from regular tofu. Next was a chewy and dense fish ball and a xiaolongbao that’s cooked in the hot pot! It had a nice soup inside and was amazing with Anthony’s sauce! Everything was great with his sauce!

What an epic meal! The venison was unreal and I loved the xiaolongbao as well. You definitely should come to The Holy Cow at Bingo Mall when you come to Shanghai!
