Before I traveled to the state of Meghalaya in northeastern India back in March of 2019, I had heard that the cuisine there was very different from the food in the rest of India. They weren’t kidding! I was blown away by the unique food there and want to share my 10 favorites. These are the top 10 Indian street foods in Meghalaya, India!

1. Pork Feast (Nat Khasi Restaurant in Iewduh Market)

Life in Shillong revolves around Iewduh Market, and one of the best places to grab some food is the market’s Nat Khasi Restaurant. Their Jadoh, Dohklieh, beef liver, and pork intestine sausage are all outstanding!

2. Khasi Thali (Trattoria Restaurant in Police Bazar)

When you visit Police Bazar, stop inside Trattoria Restaurant to try the rice-and-pork dish called Jadoh, as well as the creamy Dohklieh, light and mild dal mash, fermented soybean sauce, spicy fish chutney, mint chutney, pork balls, and pork fat. I was in pork heaven!

3. Momos & Chow (Police Bazar at Night)

Return to Police Bazar at night, when the street food vendors open shop, to try the juicy pulled chicken momos with mild red sauce and the flavorful chow with chicken and onion. Add green chili sauce for a spicy kick!

4. Dohklieh and Pork Innards (Police Bazar Breakfast)

If you visit Police Bazar in the morning, you’ll find street food vendors selling traditional dishes for breakfast, including the Russian salad-like Dohklieh and meatballs and pork innards that you can eat with chapati. They’re fatty, juicy, and full of flavor!

5. Pitha (Police Bazar Breakfast)

One of my favorite sweet dishes in Meghalaya is the Pitha you can find at Police Bazar in the morning. It’s a thick, airy, pounded rice patty that contains coconut and sugar. It’s sweet and is bursting with coconut flavor!

6. Home-Cooked Feast (Jordan’s House)

When you travel solo and rely solely on locals like I do, you often have some amazing experiences you’d never have otherwise, like getting invited into a new friend’s house for a home-cooked meal. My guide’s friend’s mom whipped up an amazing feast that included mouthwatering minced beef patties, green beans, fatty pork with sesame curry, dried beef, and more!

7. Putharo with Chicken Curry (R. Kharbangar Tea Stall)

As you head south to the Cherrapunjee area, stop in the town of Mylliem to eat at R. Kharbangar Tea Stall. The chewy pork intestines with liver were amazing, but the tender chicken curry with putharo was the highlight! Letting the curry soak into the putharo was the best part!

8. Prawn Maggi (Mawkdok)

On the ride to Cherrapunjee, make another stop near Mawkdok Valley, where you’ll find a restaurant selling an instant noodle dish called Prawn Maggi. It’s very flavorful and full of spices, and is even better when you add some of the spicy sauce that’s provided!

9. River Hut Feast (Shnongpdeng)

When you visit the Dawki area, be sure to stop by the huts along the Umngot River in Shnongpdeng. From the light and fishy river fish curry to the moist and buttery beef curry, this meal is unreal. The earthy jackfruit, bony fish fry, spicy tomato chutney, fruity dal, and bitter jungle vegetable were also spectacular!

10. Blood Sausage (Laitlyngkot)

Blood sausage is one of my favorite foods in the world and some of the best I’ve ever had was from a street food stall in the town of Laitlyngkot. It’s served with onions, chili, and peppers and is made of hot, spicy meat with an amazing texture!
