Kintsugi (Episode 1): The Ancient Japanese Practice That Will Heal You
"Kintsugi" is a 4-episode limited series written and directed by Candice Kumai. This docu-series shot throughout Japan originally aired on NHK World in 2020 & 2021 and now, we are excited to present it to you!
Kintsugi teaches us that our brokenness can become our superpower and lead us back into the light of love and hope for the future.
Following Candice's pilgrimage to her motherland, Kumai explores Japanese philosophies and ancient practices, including the titular Kintsugi--the art of golden repair. The series is based off of her book, "Kintsugi Wellness."
Now updated for 2025, these practices and philosophies are more relevant than ever. In a world ravaged by anxiety, depression, and hopelessness, Kumai provides the antidote.
In Episode 1, "Kintsugi", we follow Candice on her journey tracing her grandfather Jun Kumai's impressionist art throughout the countryside of Beppu, Japan. Candice reconnects to her grandfather's own struggles, and her mother Miho Kumai guides her tracing the footsteps of her Grandfather's artwork. We speak with the monks in the mountains of Koyasan as they guide us to see the world through a different lens. The monks know that dark places do indeed, exist, and because of this they are always praying for you.
