All About LA TOMATINA - Tomato Festival Spain - The Rules, Fun Facts and Origin You Need to Know
Spain has all kinds of crazy traditions, but La Tomatina Festival is arguably one of the best festivals in Spain
La Tomatina is a festival that has been held on the last Wednesday of August since 1945. Held in Buñol, a small town near Valencia, Spain, participants throw tomatoes at each other purely for entertainment purposes.
There are some rules, like tomatoes have to be smashed before throwing, and no other projectiles are allowed. The fight only lasts for one hour, but during that time around 150,000 over-ripe tomatoes are splattered.
Surprisingly, every year 40,000 people participate in the festival and enjoy the food fight in their own way. Many people come from different countries especially to become a participant in the festival.
What to wear is key- Tomatina Dress code: wear clothes that you don't mind to throw away after the epic fight. Some people wear white t-shirts, some others wear old clothes. Swimsuit under your clothes is not a bad idea because you're gonna end up soaked by tomato rain and water hoses.
There was a song in the 2011 Bollywood film ""Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara"" where the La Tomatina festival was re-created opening the festival up to a whole new range of enthusiasts from the sub-continent.
