In 1911, Wassily Kandinsky painted the his first fully abstract painting — and changed the course of art history forever.
This film tells the story of one of the most influential artists of all time. A former lawyer who didn't begin painting until age 30, Kandinsky went on to pioneer abstract art, transforming how the world understands colour, form, and expression.
Kandinsky called his works "Improvisations" and "Compositions", titles that reflected his deep belief in the connection between painting and music. His canvases burst with colour and energy, with forms that rush, float, tremble, and dance in ways no artist had achieved before.
Working alongside fellow expressionists Franz Marc, August Macke, and Paul Klee, Kandinsky pushed art beyond description and representation. He believed that colour and form, freed from depicting the physical world, could speak directly to the mind and soul.
His impact reached far beyond the canvas, shaping graphic design, architecture, film, and music. But it was in painting that his legacy ran deepest.
