For decades, thick sea ice served as Canada’s natural defense, but today, that wall is disappearing. In October 2006, ice coverage in the Northwest Passage plummeted to just 24%, a staggering drop from the 44% ten-year average. This film follows legal experts aboard the icebreaker Amundsen and flight crews in CP-140 Aurora patrol planes as they monitor the Arctic frontier during demanding 12-hour missions.

With over a quarter of the world's known oil and mineral reserves at stake, the pressure from international powers like the U.S. and Russia is mounting. Using advanced sonars and magnetic anomaly detectors to track sub-surface activity, Canadian forces must prove they can control their 12-nautical-mile territorial limits before the passage is lost to international interests.
