Every second of every day, eight billion people measure time using a number system designed in prehistoric Iraq before 3500 BCE. 60 seconds. 60 minutes. 360 degrees. Not adapted — directly inherited, unchanged, for 5,500 years. The GPS satellites orbiting Earth right now calculate position in degrees derived from a Sumerian decision. America's official timekeeping body credits them explicitly. But nobody asks the obvious question: how did a pre-literate civilisation arrive at the most mathematically optimal number base ever used — with no developmental record, no intermediate stages, no trial and error? And why did they say they didn't figure it out themselves?
