ExclusiveHow to End Back Pain and Anxiety by Calming Danger Signals in the Brain | Howard Schubiner|Vital Signs
“You’re calming and soothing that danger signal in the brain. That can have a very powerful effect on reducing or actually eliminating [chronic] pain,” says Dr. Howard Schubiner, summing up how the mind-body approach to relieving pain works.
Schubiner is a world expert in pain management and mind-body medicine; he is also a clinical professor at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.
Apart from chronic back pain, there’s also scope for pain to be “unlearned” in other chronic conditions, like fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic pelvic pain, and migraine headaches, says Schubiner.
For “Unlearn Pain and Anxiety PART 2” on “Vital Signs,” Schubiner gives first-hand examples of pain and anxiety being overcome through pain reprocessing, and emotional awareness and expression therapies.
This includes the case of a military veteran being guided to give expression to the unconscious source of his anxiety and chronic pain through the mind-body approach.
“That process freed up this danger signal in his brain, and after that, his pain immediately went down,” says Schubiner.
“He’s back at work, he’s going to school, he’s studying, he’s got his life back, and it’s just an incredible process to see.”
