Has A.I. Made The Web Obsolete?

So I play with all of these large language models, all of these AI chatbots. This is something I play with all the time now. I use things like Claude and ChatGPT almost on a daily basis. And these things are fantastic. Anytime I need information, reliable information sometimes, a lot of times I just default to using these tools. And I do wonder, has AI and these large language models, has that made the world wide web obsolete? Because I can't remember the last time I actually went to a website for honest or real information, right? Because I don't hang out on social media at all. I don't trust anything that's posted on social media. I don't really trust modern news media at all either, right? Outside of, you know, the occasional, you know, I'll look up something on Wikipedia or something like that or go to dictionary.com or thesaurus.com outside of, you know, reference material like that. Most of the time, these days, when I want information, I just ask Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude, you know, one of these large language models. And I think because of that, I think I'm not the only one. And I see the world wide web becoming less and less important. Or let me put it this way. I see your standard websites becoming less and less important. I think these days, the purpose of a website has shifted. Now the purpose of a website, instead of being like primarily information retrieval sorts of tools, now I see websites as just a feeder system that feeds into these large language models. And that's their only purpose in life anymore. You see a lot of businesses these days leveraging the power of some of these AI tools. And I really think that will be the end of the web as we know it, especially the end of building websites the way we used to is once businesses realize that they don't need that website or that standard web presence. Right now, if you're a business, you still need that presence on the web. But I think at some point, we'll find a better way to do some of that as well. Now one of the areas that I do find that these large language models kind of lack some authenticity is like, you go to a website, maybe a blog, and you read somebody's blog on something. And maybe it's an informative blog on some tech issue or whatever it happens to be. But other than them giving you this information that you're after, they also give you their experience, their opinions, right? They give you some storytelling. They give you some personality, sometimes some brand personality, right? And this is something that AI, at least right now, can't replicate. AI is not good at storytelling. If you've ever had AI, for example, write a piece of fiction for you, right? It can create a story, but it's not the kind of story that a human being can create because it doesn't have those kinds of human experiences to draw on just yet. It will probably get better in the future, but right now, that's the one thing that I think AI still lacks. It lacks that soul, it lacks that character. I think one of the big parts of the web that will be replaced by things like ChatGBT and Claude and Gemini and Perplexity and all of these LLMs is search engines, right? I don't typically do like a Google search like I used to. Nowadays, instead of typing in a search query and then getting a list of websites and then me going and scouring those websites to see which one has the information that I'm looking for, I'm just going to ask, I'm gonna ask Gemini. I'm not gonna search Google, I'm just gonna ask Gemini because it's going to tell me exactly what I was looking for, right? It's going to go find that information out there on the web and give me exactly what I want, usually in a summary, like it won't go into great detail. If you want greater detail on something, you have to keep asking it for more detail, more detail, more detail. So that's something that, now that I think about it right now, we couldn't replace something like a Wikipedia, for example, because sometimes you wanna go into greater detail on a topic or some instruction manuals, things like that that go into great detail where right now the summary kind of basic outline format that these LLMs use probably isn't going to replace all of that just yet. But I see the web becoming a much smaller place. I've been seeing this for years. I saw this really 20 years ago with the rise of social media, with the rise of things like Facebook and Twitter, that the web has become a really small place. I mean, there's billions and billions and billions of webpages out there, but they're all controlled by just a handful of sites, a handful of companies, right? So much of the web, when you do a search on the web, it's sites like Facebook, sites like Twitter, right? All of that is in the search results. It's not, you know, in the early days of the World Wide Web, it was just millions and millions of individual people creating their own personal websites, and that has been lost. That's been lost for decades now. But I'm going to assume that that's probably gonna be what's about to happen to a lot of these corporate websites. A lot of these are about to be thinned out because of AI and some of these large language models because they're going to render a lot of the websites out there, even some of the big corporate websites, they're gonna render a lot of those kind of pointless, right? And eventually, the few websites that will survive are gonna have to be high quality, well-structured websites that contain really valuable information, right? It has to be a website that is absolutely considered a source of truth, right? The propaganda, the bullshit, right? That's about to go away, I think, because AI is going to render a lot of that stuff. It's going to expose it. It's going to expose a lot of the fraudulent stuff that's out there on the internet. So in some ways, I think that's a good thing. I actually, for me personally, I would love for the entire World Wide Web, as we know it, to die because it's a dumpster fire. We just need to scrap the whole thing and come up with something better. Now I know that's a pipe dream, or at least it's not something that's going to happen like next week. But at some point, we need to reimagine the internet, the web, and I think in some ways, this rise of AI, the birth of AI, is going to drastically change the web. Anyway, peace.
