New reports reveal the CCP is secretly charting the ocean floor across the Pacific, including around Taiwan, Guam, and even Hawaii. Under the guise of “scientific research,” China is building the data it needs for submarine warfare—and potentially a future conflict with the United States.
So how serious is this threat? And what does it mean for the balance of power in the Pacific?
In this episode of China Uncensored, we break down China’s underwater strategy—and why it could change everything.
China is laying the groundwork for war.
Or should I say, seawork?
Please keep watching—
Welcome to China Uncensored, I'm Chris Chappell.
Back in 2008, Admiral Timothy Keaton told the Senate Armed Services Committee that a
senior Chinese officer suggested to him,
Why don't we reach an agreement, you and I?
You take Hawaii East, we'll take Hawaii West.
Which would make the map look like this.
It sounds like a joke, but the Chinese Communist Party is deadly serious.
In fact, it's actively working on making that dream a reality.
It's almost inspiring, in a way.
Go after your dreams the way the CCP does.
Don't let common decency stop you.
Things are not looking good.
On the home front, you have CCP-linked groups funding the No Kings protest, which just so
happen to include these guys.
There is only one solution!
Communist revolution!
Yes, no kings, but maybe a Stalin?
Never ask a communist their body count.
Meanwhile, out in the seas, China is preparing for war.
Not just with Taiwan.
I'm talking right in American territory.
I'm talking Hawaii.
The war is a lot closer than most people realize.
Reuters released this report.
China is mapping the ocean floor as it prepares for submarine warfare with the US.
And it is shocking.
Reuters managed to track, for the first time, the extent of China's efforts to map the
ocean floor for submarine warfare.
Just last month, Rear Admiral Mike Brooks, the commander of the US Office of Naval Intelligence,
warned Congress that what China is doing enables submarine navigation, concealment, and positioning
of seabed sensors or weapons.
And represents a strategic concern.
A strategic concern.
You think?
Kind of underselling it, I'd say.
That'd be like calling a 6-pound tumor in your neck a potential boo-boo.
So why isn't this the biggest story in the world right now?
Well, because it's all done under the guise of scientific research.
Take, for example, the Dongfang Hong 3.
It's totally a research ship.
It's operated by the Ocean University of China, for goodness sake.
Between 2024 and 2025, it sailed all over the seas near Taiwan, Japan, the Indian Ocean,
even the US territory, Guam.
What was it doing?
Well, officially, mud surveys and climate research.
But the university also admitted the ship was doing extensive deep-sea mapping.
And the Dongfang Hong 3 is just one of many Chinese research ships doing the same thing.
You can see the way that they are mapping the ocean in tight grids.
Here, for example, they're mapping waters in and around the Indian Ocean and Arabian
Sea, where China just happens to be dependent on oil shipments.
Yeah, this isn't just for mud sampling and climate research.
In fact, in 2021, the president of Ocean University, the university behind the Dongfang Hong 3,
publicly celebrated its close ties to China's navy and commitment to the construction of
a maritime power and national defense.
Totally about mud samples.
They're just charting territory around hostile nations to find the best mud masks to use
to get rid of dark circles under your eyes.
Man, Justin Trudeau was a real trendsetter, huh?
Get this.
These research ships sometimes disable their trackers.
They go dark.
We don't know where they went, so we don't know how big this problem actually is.
Ryan Martinson, an expert on China's maritime strategy at the US Naval War College, says
it's frankly astonishing to see the enormous scale of Chinese maritime scientific research.
And naval warfare experts told Reuters this mapping would help China deploy its submarines
more effectively and hunt down those of its adversaries.
In the event of war over Taiwan, China will need to ensure these critical oil shipping
lanes remain open to them, because the first thing the US would do is try and blockade
these waters to starve China out.
Just ask Cuba if their power is back on.
Speaking of Taiwan, want to know where a lot of these research ships are going?
If you guessed near Taiwan, you aren't thinking big enough.
Here's the mapping of the Western Pacific.
You know, Hawaii West.
It's a little dense, so it might be hard to see, but here's Taiwan, completely mapped
out.
But what's even more shocking is the waters around Guam, US territory with a major US
military base, where the US stations some of its nuclear submarines.
I know what you're thinking.
The perfect place to research the perfect mud for a mud mask.
This is where naval warfare experts say submarine battles will be the most intense.
And the balance of power is tipping.
China now has the largest navy in the world, 232 times the shipbuilding capacity of the
US, which is an overwhelming quantity, even if the quality is made in China.
With this mapping, according to Martinson, for decades, the US Navy could assume an asymmetric
advantage in its knowledge of the ocean battlespace.
But this threatens to erode that advantage.
Now maybe you're thinking, oh wow, China has a huge advantage.
They aren't a pushover.
Is it really worth risking US lives to defend Taiwan against all this?
That is a view that's out there.
I think we've reached the limits of our power.
And power has limits.
Like that's another thing just to keep in mind.
Power's not infinite.
You can squander it.
And we're in the process of doing that.
You can see the cold logic to that.
So why not?
You take Hawaii East, we'll take Hawaii West.
Just form the multipolar world order.
The US will just roll over.
Shame you don't at least get a treat like when a dog does it.
I do love me some beef liver bites.
But there's a problem with this.
For one, what counts as Hawaii East?
Does that include New Guinea?
New Zealand?
Australia?
And it doesn't end there, since China can be called a lot of things, but unambitious
isn't one of them.
Because China isn't just mapping the waters near it, it's mapping out Hawaii.
Right now, Hawaii is a major source of America's ability to project power out into the Pacific.
And you thought some of its tourists were the scariest thing on the islands.
Currently, China is boxed in by the first island chain.
But if China takes Taiwan, it will have broken through.
Already China has made agreements with a ton of Pacific island nations in the second island
chain, some of which include deep water ports perfect for navy ships.
And if China could take Hawaii, then it would be a complete reversal.
It would be the US that's boxed in.
And let me add, China is also sending these research ships around Alaska.
Newsweek mapped some of this out.
What we're seeing is how the Chinese Communist Party slowly strangles the US, cutting it
off from the oceans and shipping lanes of the Pacific and Arctic.
We can't afford to not fight back.
Because we'll take Hawaii West, you take Hawaii East, we'll just turn into we'll
take Hawaii.
Which will turn into we'll take Hawaii and Alaska.
And who knows what after that.
But there is good news.
Even with these detailed underwater maps for submarine warfare, China's submarine fleet
is not invincible.
Back in 2024, one of China's newest nuclear-powered submarines just sank, not in deep ocean, near
its shipyard.
That's like pulling out of your driveway and having your engine explode.
Which coincidentally sounds like something that would happen if you drive a Chinese EV.
And as I reported recently, there's been a major purge in China's defense industry
after the dismal failures of Chinese military tech in Iran and Venezuela.
So there's no reason to be defeatist.
But there's also no reason to be overconfident.
China is preparing for war.
Are we?
