Wanhuayan Caves are part of an underground river cave system located just 12 km from Chenzhou, a historical city dating back to the Qin dynasty (221-207 BC). The discovered portion of the system is about 10 km long. Thanks to its naturally stable climate - 17-19°C throughout the year - the site has been a well-known attraction since the Southern Song dynasty (12th-13th centuries). Numerous ancient stone inscriptions inside and outside the caves attest to this long history. The caves were redeveloped and opened to the public in 1987, and about 2.2 km are currently accessible to visitors.
