Every spring, millions of migrating birds cross Israel—the land bridge between Africa, Asia and Europe. After their exhausting desert flight, southern Israel becomes a crucial stopover where storks, pelicans, flamingos and raptors regain strength.

The dense concentration of birds makes Israel a hotspot for research. Using tiny GPS transmitters, scientist Ran Nathan tracks their routes to uncover the mysteries of migration. But the crowded skies also endanger aircraft. Ornithologist Yossi Leshem has therefore developed an early-warning system that protects planes from bird strikes.

At the end of March, Eilat hosts the annual Migration Festival. Hundreds of bird enthusiasts and scientists gather to observe, photograph and celebrate this spectacular natural event—among them Berlin photographer Thomas Krumenacker, who returns each year in search of the perfect shot..
