History documentary on the samurai navies of medieval Japan (c. 1600). Pre-Order Europa Universalis V: https://play.europauniversalis.com/In...

In the True Size series we model ancient militaries to scale with 3D simulations in Unreal Engine 5. Our prior episode on Japan explored the True Size of a Samurai army of the Sengoku Jidai ( • True Size of a Samurai Army [c. 1600] 3D D... ). In this episode we now turn to the seas to see what navies of the era were like.

This begins with an introduction to the naval history of medieval Japan. We then cover the basic forms of construction and how these were used to develop the major classes of warships which emerged with the dawn of the Sengoku Jidai. Fleet formations and battle tactics are then covered with a final discussion of the historical scenarios in which they fought. This includes the famous Battle of Kizugawaguchi where Oda Nobunaga deployed the first ever ironclad vessels as well as the 1,000 ship strong naval invasion of Korea during the Imjin War.
