We're going to start off our New Forest pony with a circle here on the left hand side of the page.
Just do it lightly in pencil. I'm just pressing a little bit harder so that you can see it on camera.
It doesn't have to be perfect. Now next to that circle we're going to draw another circle but
just slightly larger and just so ever so slightly further down than the other one.
So New Forest ponies where are they from? What are they? They're actually a breed here very
The New Forest is in Hampshire in the south of England and they're beautiful. There are
thousands of them. Just these beautiful ponies just roaming around the New Forest
and it's just so beautiful to see. Now we're going to join up these two circles. So a line just
coming downwards like this and another one just from here coming downwards just to touch this
circle just here. Now we're going to be drawing the head. So just in line with this one. I'm
drawing a guideline just coming downwards so that you know where I am. Just about here to the right
hand side of that guideline I'm going to be drawing another circle. This is going to be the
pony's head. Just something like this. These New Forest ponies have ever such a lovely temperament.
They can be trained really easily to ride and they're just really lovely ponies. Very friendly.
So I'll show you a photo. We just went up to one. Super friendly. Just let us pat its mane.
Really lovely breed. I'm going to put it in the eye. In fact, sorry. I was talking so much. This
is a little bit too long. I'm just going to bring it a little bit shorter. Now from here I'm going
to be drawing a curved line coming up to hit the other circle. This is the neck and another curved
line coming downwards like this. This horse is feeding. Just grazing. Remember if I go too quickly
just hit pause and rewind. What I like to do is to watch the whole video first when I'm doing a
tutorial. Somebody else's tutorial. And then I'll go back and then pause it in between all the steps.
So I'm just going to curve this line around. This is like a triangle. An isosceles triangle. A very
rough one. And then a line coming down and then just in line with the mouth we're going to be
drawing the hoof. In fact, we're going to extend that line. This is going to be our grass line. So
just my very wiggly straight line. Grassland isn't very straight anyway. So I'm just drawing all the
way across. Now for the other leg. Line coming down. One coming around like this. And then it's
slightly bent. Just kind of curved. And then the hoof down the bottom. Now for the hind legs. So
just starting here where this line touches the circle we're going to be drawing a kind of a
triangle. If that even exists. Something like that. And then the leg coming down. And then the hoof.
And then the other one's just poking out from behind this one. So we're going to start this
one just up here. Around like that. This one comes a bit more straight down like this.
And there's a little tilt. And then the hoof. Like that. Then last but not least, the tail.
So I'm going to go into pen now. But please do carry on in pencil. This is just so you can see
it better on camera. I'm just testing out this new pen. It's a brush pen. And it's just really,
really, really cool. You'll see what I mean. We are going to start off with the eye. So
just drawing a shape like that. Then the eyelid. Just like so. A line coming down.
And now we're going to put in the ear. Just here where the top of the circle is.
It's got its ears pricked up. Just like that. And now for the forelock. It's got quite a long
forelock. Just like that. We're going to carry on. So it's just grazing here. And then the mouth.
And they're very, very fluffy. So I'm just drawing lots of little kind of furry lines.
These are just little wispy lines. Just to denote the fur. Coming all the way up. Coming
round. Making these lines a little bit longer now that we're getting to the top.
And then smoother as we do the front of the leg. Comes down to about there. I'm just going to go
back and finish off the muzzle area. Here I'm going to be drawing of the neck and the start of
the mane. Just to the left hand side of that line that we did before. Because this part's going to
be the mane. All the way up to the top. So there have been new forest ponies since the last ice
age. Can you believe that? Been around for ages. So coming up to here. Little bit of a straight
part. Coming back round. Couple of furry lines. And then drawing the leg now. You'll probably
hear the seagulls again. They always know when I'm doing a tutorial. So coming up the way to here.
I'm just going to add in the hoof here. So just doing the back of this leg. This one's a bit more
furry on the back of the leg. And the hoof. And this other front one. Coming round. Way up. This one's
really quite hairy. And the hoof. So these ponies are actually owned by people who have something
called rights of common pasture. But they're just free to roam wherever they like. So when you go
to the new forest you've got to be so careful when you're driving. Because they'll just walk out in
front of you. Here we go. Just going upwards like this. And now for the hind leg. Way down. Round here.
And upwards. I'm just going to pop in the hoof just here. And also for the tail. Just doing one
long line. And then we're just going to draw in some grass. The grass is quite short around here
because all these ponies have been grazing. It's like heathland and forest. It's such a beautiful
place. If you haven't visited I do recommend you go and have a visit to the new forest.
Okay so if you haven't gone over it and pen yet go over it and pen and then erase all the pencil
marks. So now that I've erased all the pencil marks I'm just going to go in and add a little
bit of shadow. Not much. I'm just adding it into areas where there's a bit more shadow. Just behind
here. The base of the foot and the hoof. I'm just going to add a lot more pigment to the tail
and to the mane. Oh and I also have to add in the other little tip of the ear. I forgot that one.
Poor horse. It's only going to have one ear. Also there's a lot of shadow underneath the neck area.
Adding some darkness to the base of the, well to the top of the hooves. Particularly behind here.
A bit more shadow to down here. Just using these straight lines. Now I'm going to add some shadow
underneath the horse. Make its belly a little bit bigger. It looks a little bit skinny.
And there we have our new forest pony drawing. I really hope you've enjoyed it. If you have
then I have a whole playlist of other horse tutorials. So check them out now.
