The Fox and the Otter - Episode 44

Several months ago I found a fox den so I set up the game camera. After several days of regular fox visits, a river otter showed up to investigate the area. This seemed to change the fox's habits, but he continued to make routine visits to the den. This video series will surveil the ongoing events at the den. Additionally, I use this location to review several different game cameras over the course of the weeks and months to come. That said, I will indicate which camera is being used in the lower left-hand corner of the video.

Welcome back to the Fox and the Otter. I found a fox den and put a game camera up to see what
would go on. In the first week, a fox routinely visited and did a little excavating. And in the
following week, a family of river otters moved in and seemed to make it their own. In the weeks
and months that followed, a lot has happened. Episode 44 takes place over the course of just
20 hours. We got a lot of snow. This little guy seems to be checking it out. He's going to have
to be hunting rodents below the snow from this point forward. We're probably looking at eight
inches of snow right now. You know, it's been weeks and weeks since we've seen the otters.
All of the rivers in the area are frozen over. And so I'm not sure if we're going to see otters
anytime soon, if they track over the snow, or exactly what they're doing this winter.
Still not going in the den, though. It's nice that he spent this much time right in front of
the camera. Usually we're always looking further away, so it's nice to see him up close. He's got
a friend coming in. See how bushy his tail has become? Doing a little scent marking up there.
That's a foxy little stretch there. I love the contrast here. That beautiful fox really
stands out against the snow well. See the darkness on his tail? He's hoping to go in there.
It is comforting that they have trails going by all of the den entrances. And so
they're obviously still interested in the dens, but they just won't go in there.
Little scent marking here. Obviously claiming this is my den hole, I guess.
Well, I keep hoping they're going to move back in here. We'll see a lot more of them.
