Welcome to the legendary Zhou dynasty, a world of mountains, temples, and timeless mysticism. I’ve been excited to get back to the Chinese dynasties, and I hope this track comes close to doing it justice. Step into the Zhou dynasty, and immerse yourself in a soundscape of beauty, ritual, and epic grandeur. This cinematic fantasy music OST was composed as a soundtrack for writing, DnD, RPG sessions, study, or simply drifting into another world.

For this score, we brought together traditional Chinese instruments, the dizi, guzheng, pipa, bawu, and suona and of course the orchestra to create a sweeping and atmospheric sound.

~ The Zhou Dynasty 📜

The Zhou dynasty (c. 1046–256 BC) was the longest-lived in Chinese history, lasting nearly eight centuries. It began when King Wu of Zhou, invoking the Mandate of Heaven, overthrew the Shang at the Battle of Muye and established control from the Wei River valley across the North China Plain. The Mandate of Heaven held that a ruler governed only with Heaven’s approval, and that tyranny or neglect would bring disasters signaling Heaven’s withdrawal of support — thereby justifying rebellion.

During the Western Zhou (c. 1046–771 BC), the dynasty exercised real authority through a feudal system of vassal states, but after the fall of the capital in 771 BC, it entered the Eastern Zhou period, surviving mostly as a ceremonial power. This later era produced both the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, marked by constant rivalry among former Zhou states and a flourishing of thought from figures such as Confucius, Laozi, and Sun Tzu. The dynasty finally came to an end in 256 BC, when the state of Qin absorbed its last remnant and went on to unify China under the first imperial dynasty.
