A newly released documentary follows a world-renowned Chinese classical dance company as it rises
to global acclaim while facing threats.
For 20 years, Shen Yun Performing Arts has faced intimidation, from cut tires on tour
buses to death threats, to slanderous articles in the New York Times.
And on Tuesday night, the dance company told their side of the story with the film premiere
of Unbroken.
NTD's Arlene Richards was there.
Let's take a look.
For 20 years, a Chinese-American dance company has faced intimidation, from cut bus tires
to death threats, to a coordinated campaign linked to the Chinese Communist Party.
But on Tuesday night, the performers had an opportunity to tell their side of the story
in the film premiere of Unbroken.
Shen Yun Performing Arts artists and principals along with filmmakers and invited guests attending
the New York red carpet premiere screening of Unbroken.
In 2006, a group of classical Chinese artists came together in New York with a mission to
revive the traditional divinely inspired culture of China from a time before communism and
share it with the world.
Since then, rigorous artistic training and spiritual conviction have shaped both their
craft and their character.
I think everyone sees Shen Yun as a perfect show or like a flawless show and that's what
we're trying to make it.
But I hope that they can see that behind that it's actually just a lot of human people.
Despite their rise to global acclaim, the group has faced constant intimidation and
threats of violence.
Well, I think what we're seeing now is all coming to a head.
The attacks at Shen Yun and more broadly in America are facing the last two, three years.
It's coming at us from the bomb threats, obviously, the spies, obviously, but also
disinformation through the most trusted news sources, supposedly, in quotation marks.
Here they're trying to do something fantastic, something that's bringing light and hope to
the world. And you've got a foreign power coming in and trying to sabotage it and silence
it.
NTD's Steve Lance investigates performers' accounts of threats and other interference
linked to the Chinese Communist Party.
The New York Times prepared a series of articles against Shen Yun over a six-month period.
In one article, it accused the company of denying medical treatment to dancers when
they are injured.
We looked into their reporting and we saw so many flaws in it. And we've decided that,
you know, it's time to give Shen Yun a voice and hear their side of the story because much
of the New York Times reporting failed to include information that was given to them
from Shen Yun.
Despite the obstacles along the way, the dance company has thrived.
Shen Yun, to me personally, is a story of hope.
It's a company that brings hope and goodness and optimism to the world.
It's a story of courage.
It's a story of doing what's right.
Shen Yun, I feel like I can't separate myself from Shen Yun.
It's taught me, it's made me who I am.
Basically, it's taught me the traditional characteristics of Chinese culture.
Before, I was someone that didn't really like Chinese culture, even though I am Chinese.
But now I appreciate it and I spread it to everybody else in the world.
When artists risk everything to preserve truth, faith and tradition, the human spirit is unbreakable.
I loved actually hearing the story and seeing how everything unfolded.
I think it's a very powerful documentary.
I highly recommend for people everywhere to go and see it to better understand what's
happening.
The film really shows American values.
The family that was depicted in Unbroken really encaptured the values of courage, grit
and love.
This is a very special film and it's very relevant to the times.
And I think it'll educate people about what's happening in the world in addition to the
beautiful dancers of Shen Yun.
I'm Marlene Richards reporting from the Lincoln Square AMC in New York City.
