Detroit Tigers rookie Kevin McGonigle squares off against San Diego Padres reliever Wandy Peralta in a 10-pitch at-bat on March 27, 2026.
They're loaded for Wandy Peralta
who comes in for a second straight outing.
Two out, bases loaded, Dan.
You know, and wouldn't it be great
and just fitting that Kevin McGonigal
gets a hit right here.
First pitch, rip at a foul ball, first base side.
And Peralta, as you mentioned earlier,
was in yesterday's game through 15 pitches
and set a career high in appearances last year, 71.
You don't see really that early
where a team will throw a guy back-to-back games.
I mean, they're barely doing it,
maybe, at all in spring training.
He threw a bundle of change-ups yesterday.
He started McGonigal with one,
then the fastball, it's one and one.
And this is where it's just perfect again
because Kevin McGonigal controls that strike zone
and has a good idea of what he's doing up there,
and there's no place to put him.
Blocked that one, two balls and a strike.
Camposano gets down to knock it down.
Bases loaded, two out.
You know, you're going to have to throw a good pitch.
He's going to make you throw a good pitch.
Talking to himself, getting ready, two and one.
McGonigal off the fists and foul.
A sinker that came to visit him.
That's that pitch that Kevin McGonigal
had good success against yesterday
from the right-handers.
Two and two, off four hits yesterday.
Kevin McGonigal grounds it foul, first base side.
Good, short, quick stroke, just trying to stay alive,
recognize that change-up.
Looked like he shortened it up just to get that little piece.
Pitch number six.
Take it to three and two.
Take it to three and two so the runners will be off.
Little piece of it.
Fighting that sinker.
Just again, right up and in.
And it's got good movement coming in there.
That caught the plate umpire, Lance Barrett, pretty square.
Alfonso Marquez comes in to check on him
and the remainder of the umpires as well.
Mike Estabrook, Malachi Moore as well.
You know, you go out and check on him in part
because you don't know about head injuries, right?
What we know about concussions that we've learned in sports
now is that it's not necessarily something
that you can just shake off.
There is always worry about a shot to the head,
even though these masks do help defray the cost of the impact.
So Lance will go back behind the plate.
And they're just like any player.
I'm fine. I'm fine.
Whether or not they actually are,
they're always going to try to suck it up and stay in the game
and that's why the crew chief, Alfonso Marquez,
kept coming down and saying,
Are you sure? Are you sure?
You know, it's not that time to be a tough guy and everything.
And obviously the right answers were given.
Pullman, Washington's own, is back behind the plate
for this seventh pitch to Philly's finest.
Kevin McGonigal on two and two.
Line drive foul right field line again.
Keeps coming in with that sinker right in on the hands.
McGonigal showing how quick he is to get that barrel to it.
Boy, I'd just love to see one more.
Just go to three and two so those runners are taken off.
Two and two.
He'll reach out and flare it foul.
Backside out, just poke it.
Exactly.
I mean, after seeing those right up under his chin,
three of them, getting a piece of them
and then getting a slider, yeah, and then getting a slider
and just staying with it long enough
just to get that little piece.
The longest Tiger at bat today does go to three and two.
Here we go. Now get that fastball up
and in and come up with that big hit.
Then you take a base on balls right here, too.
Work that count. Work that at bat.
Three and two. Base is loaded.
Tie game in the eighth to the rookie McGonigal.
Line drive right field base hit.
Kevin McGonigal comes through
and the Tigers have taken the lead.
This young man is totally unfazed
by these lights in the show.
You get it to three and two
and they got to come in.
There's no place to put them.
And this one is not up and in.
This one is center cut.
Look at that.
Just that nice, short, quick swing.
Boom, right to right field.
Not even that big follow through trying to hit it out.
Watch him stop that bat.
Just trying to hit a nice line drive
and exactly what he did to put the Tigers ahead by two.
What an at bat.
You know, we were talking before the game with him
and, you know, you read about him growing up a Phillies fan
and just said real fast, like, the Chase Utley thing is real.
