BT Sport and Premier League Tonight pundit Martin Keown recalls how he used to try to intimidate Sir Alex Ferguson during his playing days, just to stop him doing it to referees!
as well but to give you some idea of Sir Alex Ferguson's influence just on an
England front just taking it we were landing from away trips at Luton Airport
and Sir Alex Ferguson said no I want this to land in Manchester and in the
end we landed in Manchester because he felt that there was more players in the
northwest of England that man was had his foot in every camp and so when you
played him on a Saturday when it's my turn to play against him I made sure
after the semi-final of the FA Cup where he really got into the face of the
referee that that evening that I would never allow him that comfort again so I
was straight in the tunnel looking for Sir Alex Ferguson, making sure I needed to block his pathway to the
referee to make it fair so what would you do then you're you're the game's
finished no time so Sir Alex comes in what do you wait to see if he's gonna
react with the referee and if he does then I'll have to step in and I'm not
gonna I'm not gonna beat up an old man I'm just gonna ferry him away from the
referee. He wouldn't allow you to ferry him away from the referee would he?
That's what he used to do. This is what he used to go off in the tunnel. How many times did he used to go off in the tunnel when we used to play?
Listen we have to say there was great respect they were great Grumpshire
players unbelievable they were trying to take away now if they weren't there
then Arsene might have had two back-to-back. Did you ever successfully ferry Sir Alex away from a
referee? No because I didn't necessarily need to do it I just kept an eye on it
That's the side of good security. The referee that day. The referee had fear in his eyes and you when Sir Alex lost it
there I mean I wasn't in his dressing room but I could not believe the fury
that which he went after this referee I thought well I can't allow that to happen again.
You're gold dust on this show absolute gold dust
