Rembrandt van Rijn The Master of Light and Shade

Most famous people are remembered and referred to by their surname - not many people in history are remembered at all; and just a few people are in a position where their prename is enough to make the referral – Rembrandt van Rijn. (Fun fact: Vincent Van Gogh signed most of his paintings with his surname "Van Gogh", but the paintings he was the most happy with himself, he signed with just his prename, "Vincent" – in homage to Rembrandt)

Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) is one of the titans in art of painting, recognized by most as one of the greatest to ever leave his mark on a canvas. And in my subjective opinion, after experiencing his art in real life, maybe the greatest of them all. As a part of the Golden Age of painting, his masterworks can be found in many forms and sizes; the large and famous group portraits, like the “Night Watch” and “Dr. Tulps Anatomy Lesson”, and the smaller half-figure portraits. Especially his self-portraits hold something unique and special, a quietude and introversion which captures the mind of a painter – as if he is still there, as if he left a part of himself in the painting, forever living on in the eyes and mind of the spectator. Towards the end of his life, his paintings are recognized by the broad but perfect brushstrokes, emanating the confidence and masterful skill of the master’s hand.
