Economic Collapse in China— 90% of Its Small Cities Could Disappear
#Chinadeepdive
Hello, this is China Deep Dive. We have all the information you need to know about China at present. Today's topic is:
China's population is increasingly concentrated in first- and second-tier cities, while third- and fourth-tier towns are being steadily "emptied out"—a trend known as the "population siphon" phenomenon.
From 2010 to 2020, among China's more than 3,000 counties, the proportion experiencing population loss reached 78%, with an increasing number of people migrating from county towns to large cities. Some experts warn that up to 90% of county towns may disappear in the future.
Reports indicate that in 2005, China had approximately 3.1 million natural villages, but by 2025, only about 1.8 to 2 million remain. One-third of China's natural villages disappeared in two decades.
Shanghai has also been found to have more than one "ghost village."
