Life Above the Clouds — The Most Isolated Village in China’s Grand Canyon
Zhiziluo Village is located in Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan, China. Built on a steep mountainside above a deep canyon, the village sits at a high elevation and is often surrounded by clouds and mist. Once an important administrative and transportation hub, it gradually faded into quiet isolation as development shifted elsewhere, earning a reputation as one of China’s most isolated villages. The name “Zhiziluo” comes from the Lisu language and is a transliteration referring to a settlement built on steep mountain slopes. Locally, it is also understood as “a good place to live,” reflecting the emotional bond residents have with this land. Houses are stacked along the mountainside, overlooking the vast Nujiang Grand Canyon below. A small number of residents still live here, maintaining a simple yet resilient way of life. With little commercial tourism, Zhiziluo offers an authentic, quiet high-mountain lifestyle closely connected to nature. More than just a village in the clouds, it provides a unique window into the history and human experience of China’s southwest mountain regions.
