Life in an Isolated Chinese Village – Isolated People in the Chinese Mountains

Wudong Miao Village is located deep within the Leigong Mountain National Nature Reserve in southeastern Guizhou Province, China, and is part of Leishan County, Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture. Situated at an altitude of about 1,300 meters, the village is nestled in a mountain basin surrounded by lush peaks. It is often enveloped in mist and clouds, earning it the nickname "Miao Village in the Clouds." A clear stream flows through the village, which is surrounded by terraced fields and dense, ancient forests. The pristine environment, with its fresh air, makes it feel like an isolated utopia.
The traditional Miao stilt houses in the village are built into the mountainside, constructed entirely from wood without a single nail. Their beautiful, staggered arrangement showcases the wisdom of the Miao people in adapting to their mountainous surroundings.
The residents are predominantly of the Miao ethnicity. They maintain many ancient traditions, with women hand-embroidering exquisite Miao clothing and silver jewelry craftsmanship being passed down through generations. They celebrate their unique festivals, such as the grand Miao New Year and the 'Eating New' festival, which prays for a good harvest.
You can see villagers working in the terraced fields (planting rice and other crops) and washing vegetables and clothes by the stream. The pace of life is slow and tranquil. Most residents are friendly and hospitable, living a traditional life in harmony with nature.
