Live from JetBlue Park in Fort Myers, Florida. It's Grapefruit League Baseball.
Today, the Boston Red Sox play host to the Atlanta Braves. Hello and welcome everyone.
Tom Perrin along with Lou Maloney must be getting close to opening day of Blues back in Florida.
It's good to be back. We got a good foot here today and we're getting close.
Five days until opening day. All the world baseball classic players are back.
You're back. Roman Anthony's back at the top of the lineup.
Yeah, what an experience for Roman. The journey just sort of continues. This kid,
not only a 21-year-old on Team USA, but a big part of Team USA. It's a monster home runs,
including game winner, you know, in the semi-finals. For a guy that missed the playoffs
last year, he just got some playoff experience. It's a great growing opportunity for Roman Anthony.
So many of these Red Sox players were impactful in that turn.
Oh, the whole outfield. I mean, everybody really performed at a high level. We know there's a few
things, right? Even Ranger Suarez didn't get the innings. I get it. Mostly Contreras swung it well.
Not many games, but everybody else off the charts. Every time you looked up, somebody from the Red
Sox was doing something positive. They're all back and the Red Sox are back home again. Just
two home games before they break camp and head north. You want March Madness. How about Garrett
Crochet against Chris Sale? A couple of flame-throwing lefties going at it today. We've
got first pitch coming your way next from Fort Myers, Florida. It's great Root League action.
We had a little cold spell while you were gone. It was down in the 40s a couple of nights. People
down here don't react to that well as Eli White steps in and it's ball one to begin the afternoon.
See two or three a game. Three-two tried to hold up. Could not strike three in a one-two-three
inning to begin the day for Garrett Crochet here at Fort Myers. Ball one from Sale. Groundball,
third base, diving play by Riley. Gets the first runner, but Story beats out one back end.
Nice play by the third baseman Austin Riley. One down here in the first. He seems to have
made those here at camp. Again the runner goes. He rips this one to right field. Chasing it down,
making the catch is Eli White. The roster is 6-3. He sets this one way up and over everything.
That's his fifth home run of the spring. He and Olsen both have hit four coming into this thing
and he just gets a hold of it. It looked like just a fastball that Crochet was trying to get.
I don't think it was their cutter. That's a little bit lower. So he's just trying to work
on this getting his fastball in on lefties or righties rather, but it's down. Numbers with
the Rockies last year. Second strike out of the game now for Crochet. Two down. Seen many of them
here at camp. Michael Harris, the second, third base. Durbin making a nice play to end the inning.
The Red Sox trail 1-0.
We said it before they left, Lou. I don't know why they didn't have it
in the tournament. Base hit to left field. And I guess the idea is the countries, you know,
many of them haven't played that way. They don't have those rules. Why not throw it in there?
Right-handed bat on the outfield. Good run. Chopper here. Dubon charges in. Not in time
as Monasterio busts off the line. The Red Sox have a little something going here in the second.
1-0. Chopper, first base, Olsen. Nice play to second base. They get the runner there.
Well done by the first baseman, Olsen. One down in the second. 3-1 from sale. Ground ball,
third base. Riley with it. He'll get the out, but the run comes in.
Sox tie it up. 1-1 here in the second. Monasterio pressing here at camp. Leaping catch there by
Durbin. And he's been showing his stuff at third today. As you mentioned, not the tallest guy,
but he's showing some pretty good reaction and ups here on this one. 16 home runs last season
for the Braves. Drives this one to the left center field gap. That'll roll to the wall as
Duran will get to it. That'll be an RBI double with two outs for Albies. He'll walk in a double
and a 2-1 lead for the Lampards. No, they have to tighten it up. There's accountability now.
3-2 pitch. Ground ball makes it through. Albies got out of the way. Now the throw as he comes in.
The ball gets away. The run scores. 3-1 lead now for the Braves. Matt Olsen delivering with two
outs in the third. 16 home runs last season. Drives this one up towards the green monster
to the top of the netting. It'll fall. That'll be an RBI double.
Sliding in and three straight two out hits now off crochet in the third.
1-1. Roman Anthony drives this one left center field. Leaping and making the play is Harris.
Mike Harris the second. Robbing Roman Anthony of extra bases. Houston drives this one right
field. Staying up for Braves there. So a quick 1-2-3-10 pitch and a good bounce back in
for Garrett Crochet. Goes 100. Check swing. Slow chopper. Durbin up with it. Couldn't get there
in time. Well done by Ike. He had to come off the bag. That's an infield single for Olsen. His
second hit of the day. Runners go high. Fly ball left field. Drifting over is Roman Anthony in the
sun and it drops in fair. Blinded in left field. Two runs will come in to score on the double for
Austin Ryan. You can see from the start once he looked up that that's on. Yeah he got long.
The chopper here. Sale covers first the gluck flip and they get the out.
A little flare to right field. That'll get over the head of IKF and Dubon's board for the first
time today. He's only been coming out of the pen. That's a big part of it. Story to the backhand.
So San Diego comes in and gets the job done. The Red Sox down six to one.
Go hit it for real. You got to sort of balance that workload they've had there
with the preparation they need. The season is during the rain. Gets pace. Hit the left field
to start doing it. But what's that work been like for the coaching staff here to keep easy?
Tough to get that back down. So the numbers in the end didn't look good.
Here nice play by Story and a good pick by IKF and a scoreless inning for Tommy Candler.
What was that experience like with some of these veterans and yet you're going out there
performing every day like you did? Yeah it was awesome. I think you know I learned here and
apply that to my game over the course of 162. A flare here. Set a field that'll drop in.
Last stop before the season you think. So yeah well there's conversations there about.
The 2-2. Strike three called and that'll end it. So the Red Sox beaten by Atlanta today.
