163 yuan — that's the monthly pension the
CCP provides to a farmer who has cultivated
twice the amount of land — a sum insufficient
for a single meal for an ordinary official
Even if a farmer catches a cold one medical
bill might not be covered and with 180 million elderly
people in rural China living on just 5.4 yuan per
day for pension expenses the situation is dire
The CCP claims this is a people-benefiting policy yet
why are Chinese farmers
suffering so much Has anyone ever
thought about this There's a film still banned by the
CCP to this day which reveals exactly what the CCP fears
The shocking truth that left everyone stunned
Everything I'm saying is being suppressed by the CCP
Yet these are the very foundations for change in China
Everyone must see it

Uncovering the truth with Li Muyang — real stories real facts
Hello dear viewers
Welcome to News Highlights
I'm Li Muyang
Today is Sunday March 22nd Eastern Time
Monday March 23 Asia-Pacific Time
Premier Li Qiang of the CCP recently announced in the
government work report at the Two Sessions that the basic pension
for urban and rural residents will increase by 20 yuan per month a move that state media hailed as a major development
The ongoing report claims that benefits for the people
are being further expanded with an accompanying image
showing a group of smiling rural elders as if they had
just won the lottery but what is the real situation
After adjustments the pension received monthly by elderly people in rural China
amounts to only 163 yuan—insufficient to
cover a single monthly subway pass in Beijing
In Shanghai you can't even afford three cups of coffee
In a rural pharmacy that same amount would barely buy two boxes of cold medicine
or just one bottle of blood pressure medication
then the money runs out again next month
According to publicly available data from the CCP
China has 180 million rural elderly
people who survive on just 163
yuan a month—180 million is more
than the entire population of Russia
Many of them are already in their eighties or nineties having spent their lives paying grain taxes
serving in the military and supporting national development—now in their old age their daily
living allowance amounts to just five yuan forty jiao and three fen
In fact this 163 yuan is even lower than China's minimum living standard
in rural areas meaning that according to
the poverty line set by the CCP itself
These 163 yuan are in themselves a poverty-level amount do you know
how much a retired bureau-level
official in Beijing receives monthly
The figure officially reported is between 5 000 and 10 000 yuan this
is the number that's been disclosed but the actual amount is far higher
We're only talking about the reported amount of 5 000 to 10 000 yuan
And these people receive nearly full reimbursement for
medical treatment with government-funded healthcare
remaining valid for life meanwhile everyone thinks about living on just five yuan forty-three fen a day
On one side is a pension starting at 5 000 yuan—this is a
microcosm of Xi Jinping's constant call for common prosperity
Some friends might recall that in 2009 the CCP did introduce a new rural
pension system where the basic monthly
pension at launch was only 55 yuan
Sixteen years have passed and the figure has risen
from 55 to 163—that's quite a significant increase isn't
it While the percentage rise is indeed substantial the
concern is how it compares to the overall rise in prices
The real worry is knowing China's inflation
rate—it's incomparable Someone might
still ask where did all the grain
contributions paid by farmers in their youth go
All the blood and sweat poured into urban development over the
decades—where has it gone The farmland worked by generations
past—where has it disappeared to No one dares to answer
these questions openly If anyone dared to answer openly—
Just like the ending of the movie we're discussing today
banned
The film we're discussing today is called "卧土 "
This is a labor of love that director Wang Xiaoshuai
has been preparing for many years Wang Xiaoshuai is part of China's Sixth Generation of filmmakers
Directed the film "17-Year-Old Bicycle " the ninth feature by the renowned director Qinghong
which has been repeatedly nominated for or won
top prizes at the Berlin and Cannes film festivals
The story follows the fate of a farmer's family from Gansu spanning
four generations and covering several
decades of modern Chinese history
From the land reform
of the 1950s all the way
to the 2008 migrant worker era October 2022
Wang Xiaoshuai submitted the completed test footage to the CCP National Film
Administration for review as part of his application for a supply license
But after waiting 15 months with no formal
response there were only repeated excuses—
requests for incomplete data additional explanations and other
delays—until early 2024
The film bureau has finally
provided answer — a revised
checklist demanding over fifty changes to the movie
Fifty changes made to the film
Do you all realize what that means
The entire movie runs for 140 minutes
So fifty revisions mean
a cut every less than three minutes on average
What was altered Wang Xiaoshuai later revealed in a
Berlin interview that he was asked to cut all scenes
involving land reform and class struggle on the grounds
that the depiction of that particular era was one-sided
No scenes or dialogue depicting famine or deaths from starvation shall appear in the Great Leap Forward segment the
migrant worker compensation storyline must include active involvement and coordination by the relevant authorities
This scene reflects the government's concern but the film's overall tone must shift from heavy
criticism to hope amid suffering progress amid
hardship and resilience in the face of adversity
Hope in hardship progress in adversity —
this is the typical CCP propaganda theme a
standard party talking point In other words
the film bureau isn't about changing this movie
But rather than making a film that speaks for farmers
turning it into a propaganda piece that keeps farmers
silent—after reading the list Wang Xiaoshuai immediately
refused saying "I won't make propaganda films "
In February 2024 he brought his film to the 74th Berlin International Film Festival in
Germany as soon as the premiere ended the audience's applause lasted for several minutes
A European media outlet at the time commented:
This is the most shocking Chinese film at this year's Berlin Film Festival
It showed the world a China that had been forgotten
The film begins in a rural village in Gansu
Province in 2008 when Beijing was hosting the Olympic
Games and the entire nation was filled with
jubilation proclaiming that China had become powerful
The Chinese nation has stood up yet
in a village in Gansu
there is a 10- year-old boy named
Wotu whose greatest
wish is to own a plastic water gun
Just a little thing to city kids is
just a cheap toy
worth a few dollars
But at Wotu's home this is nothing
short of an unattainable dream Wotu's
father A Chuan works year-round on
construction sites in distant provinces
He is one among hundreds of millions of Chinese
migrant workers doing the heaviest dirtiest and
most dangerous jobs yet without urban household
registration or access to urban health insurance
There's no way for the child to study
in the city let alone
live in the modern
high-rises helped build— he's a builder
of the city yet forever an outsider
Mother Mu Yue of the fertile
land is one among millions
of left-behind women in China—tending fields alone raising children by herself
caring for her dying father
-in-law and constantly dealing with unexpected visitors
The local officials tasked with accelerating land development
youth was thus gradually worn down between
barren fields and dilapidated houses
the grandfather of the fertile land is now elderly
The film opens with
this old man digging desperately in
the cracked yard every
day no one knows what he's searching for
one time while
digging he broke his leg
Wo Tu rushed over to ask
Grandpa what are you looking for
The old man didn't answer
Wo Tu asked his father for a water gun
His father said "Wait until Dad gets back then I'll buy it for you "
They waited and waited
His father kept breaking his promise again and again
Later Grandpa told Wotu
When Grandpa dies he'll become a ghost
and come back to give you a water gun
An old man with a promise
made after death prepares
to make up for the
helplessness he felt while alive
The fertile soil symbolizes not the child in the
film but rather the 70 million left-behind children
across China whose parents
work in cities while they
are left in rural areas raised by their grandparents
They even have to take care of themselves and
according to public surveys
over 40% of children in
China in such situations face varying degrees of
mental health issues including
anxiety and depression
Autistic tendencies and so on and so forth
But in the CCP's performance reports
such children number seventy million
yet they seem to not exist at all
They are merely a number casually overlooked
Caught between GDP growth
rate and urbanization rate
The fertile soil waited through his entire childhood—
neither the water gun nor the
expected joy arrived only the
devastating news of a shattered
family his father injured
and the film's story unfolds not in a linear fashion
Director Wang Xiaoshuai uses the dreamlike
approach of "Wasteland" to transport viewers back to
eras deliberately buried by the CCP the first
dream in Wasteland takes place in the early 1950s
Land reform
At that time Grandfather of the fertile land was still a young man
After the CCP entered the village
it brought slogans like "rising up to become masters of our own destiny"
as well as class distinctions and mass meetings to struggle against landlords
Landlords and rich peasants were dragged one by one into the
square for public struggle yet the violence of the land reform
was far from simple confrontation with landlords—people went
to great lengths to demonstrate loyalty to the collective
Keeping his revolutionary群众 identity meant
everything to the young
man's grandfather who did
something that haunted him for the rest of
his life— he led people into his own courtyard
He dug up the two inherited jars
of gold silver and jewelry from
underground turned them all in then
personally picked up a thick hemp rope
He put the rope around his own father 's
neck and dragged him up
onto the struggle platform Why Because Grandpa
Wo Tu had once been helped by a landlord
The component designated as problematic
necessitated the grandfather publicly
distancing himself from his father so the
son placed the rope around his father's neck
Amid the angry shouts of the crowd he
walked step by step
toward the square—scenes
like this occurred countless times
throughout the entire land reform movement
Between 1950 and 1953 there
is no exact figure for how many
people were killed estimates
range from one to two million
And those who were forced
to expose and denounce their
own family members—though they survived their hearts
never knew peace again from that moment on because this
was not merely a denunciation of a single person
Instead of shattering the ethical foundations of
a millennia-old steel mill it tore a family apart
into two halves—the great-grandfather of the
fertile land the very elderly man paraded in public
Survived the land reform but didn't
make it through the Great Leap Forward
The second dream of the fertile land
was the Great Leap Forward of 1958
Mao Zedong issued a command
and the entire nation embarked on mass steel production
farmers laid down their hoes and felled trees
All the iron pots farming tools and
door hinge chains from home were thrown
into the earth kiln the fields lay
abandoned and the grain rotted away
The figures reported from各地 to the central
government were consistently rising but
Grandpa Wo Tu was now mentally deranged
wandering aimlessly all day muttering to himself
Unable to distinguish reality from illusion
in a scene from the movie at the现场 of a
massive steel rally his great-grandfather
suddenly appeared amidst the blazing flames
He glanced around
at the
flickering flames then at the excited shouting
crowd and without
a word without any
music leapt into the steel furnace
Only the flickering flames and silence remained— this
shot when seen by anyone with a conscience left
them speechless for a long time The grandfather
watched helplessly as his
father vanished into the fire
And that piece of hemp rope became the heaviest枷锁 of his second half of life at the
film's end grandfather desperately dug into
the earth in the courtyard on his deathbed
In truth what he was digging for wasn't
treasure at all but
his lost conscience—
he had betrayed his own father and that
guilt had weighed on him his entire life
When it comes to the Great Leap Forward famine
many might think it wasn't a natural disaster but
that's not true—there was still food available at the time and it wasn't
caused by a natural disaster
From 1959 to 1961
national grain
reserves across various regions
still had stockpiles but
farmers themselves
could not eat
Local officials in their relentless pursuit of increasingly inflated grain procurement
targets stripped farmers' homes bare leaving
not a single grain of their daily food supply
Farmers went hungry while
watching their grain
loaded onto trucks and hauled into storage
The granaries were full yet people
starved to death Historian Yang Jisheng
recorded the case of Fengyang County
in Anhui Province in his book Tombstone
In 1959 the grain procurement volume
reported by Fengyang far exceeded
the actual harvest for that year yet
the procurement continued unabated
That year one-fifth of Fengyang County's population died of starvation in Tongwei County
Gansu one-third perished in some communes in
Sichuan the mortality rate even exceeded 50%
Yet on Mao Zedong's desk reports of victory
continued to arrive—grain production set new
records year after year and the steel-making campaign consistently exceeded its targets
From the grassroots up through
the central leadership lies piled
upon lies ultimately leading to the deaths of tens of millions
It left an indelible mark in history
historians estimate that between thirty million
and forty-five million people died of starvation during the Great Leap Forward
Chinese demographer Feng Ke's research indicates
that the number of unnatural deaths exceeded
45 million marking the largest man-made famine in human history during the 20th century
But so many people have died—yet in the CCP's textbooks this period of history is reduced to just a few
lines citing natural disasters and the withdrawal
of Soviet aid along with some mistakes made in work
China has gone through temporary difficulties
— in fact even today Xi Jinping is using such mechanisms to layer new
lies on top of old ones
and local officials dare not report bad news
Data keeps getting revised GDP growth is
always meeting targets history just repeats
itself like this—now I’d like to share
something with you A
viewer wrote me a letter
He said his father came from a rural area

At this point let's rewind to 2008—Wotu'
s father A Chuan suffered a construction
accident in which both of his legs were
completely crushed by machinery yet he survived
But with both legs gone the construction company
presented a compensation
plan offering 500 000 RMB
Fifty thousand seems like a substantial amount but in
reality it's among the lowest compensation levels in China
For a Beijing urban resident injured on duty the same
incident would result in a significantly higher payout
The compensation amount is typically between 1.2 million and 1.8 million
So why did the father of the fertile land receive such a small compensation
Under the legal framework of the CCP state compensation for
personal injury is calculated under two separate standards
—keep this in mind: urban residents are compensated based
on the per capita disposable income of urban residents
Migrant workers' compensation is calculated based on the per capita disposable income of rural residents
that is the same injury the same body yet the value of
your life depends on your household registration book
A rural household registration is worth so little in the eyes of the CCP
This isn't an unwritten rule
It's explicitly written in black and white in the CCP's legal statutes
It wasn't until 2022 that the Supreme
Court began gradually piloting a unified
compensation standard but enforcement
has remained inconsistent to this day
Nearly 300 million migrant
workers across China face the same
potential situation when confronting business and industry
Akagawa lost his legs and the ability to work
after losing 500 000 yen the fertile soil he
waited for throughout his childhood received
not a water gun but his
father in a wheelchair
The film ends with a heavy rain pouring from the sky
the old house 承载ing the blood and tears of four generations of a family
collapses abruptly in the howling storm
The ruins lay silently
on the yellow earth no
music no narration no one weeping the fertile land was forced to leave
that place heading toward
the city that had swallowed his father's legs
He too went out to work to make a living
continuing his father's fate
remaining an outsider
That land is called Fertile Soil
the child is also named Fertile
Soil both the land and the child
have lost their own futures
That's the plot summary of the film "Fertile Soil
" Wang Xiaoshuai made no changes to it Naturally
he therefore did not receive the dragon label—
the official theatrical release permit in China
Without this theater distribution license supply
is impossible naturally resulting in no box office revenue and all investments
would be wasted Why didn 't
Wang Xiaoshuai accept the 50 requested revisions
Why would he sacrifice the entire film's commercial
prospects Actually he wasn't
without options—he could have cut the land
reform segment and framed it as historical
inevitability or altered the Great Leap Forward section
Translating the spirit of mutual aid
among people during natural disasters
could also give Ak川's story an
additional ending where the government actively steps in to resolve
the issue if rewritten this way the film might be approved for release and
potentially achieve box office success
Maybe it wouldn't have been banned the
But if we change it like that is
this still fertile ground for a film
After its premiere in Berlin Soil sparked intense
international attention with
major media outlets across
Europe delivering in-depth
coverage and hailing it as
one of the most significant Chinese films of the year
It portrays the fate of four generations
to reveal a face of Chinese peasants beyond
official propaganda of course the CCP has
banned Soil so most people
in China cannot see it
So much has already been censored by the CCP but there are still
many things the CCP cannot suppress
A Chuan lies on the construction
site staring at the spot where his
legs have vanished—this reality
is widespread across mainland China and it cannot be silenced
The trembling footsteps of my father
being tied with hemp rope by his
grandfather as he was led toward the
struggle platform—people have memories
The gaze of the old patriarch of the fertile land
cast toward the crowd just before leaping into
the steel furnace still lingers in many hearts
—and especially so under the rule of Xi Jinping
163 pension payments —
the shame behind them
— how can it be silenced As long as humanity
remains as long as people still have a shred
of conscience the truth
can never be suppressed
Alright that concludes everything
