The castmates of the most fantastic show, truly.
I'm gonna start with Michael,
since you worked with Luca numerous times.
What advice did you give your castmates?
None, they didn't need it.
These people are gorgeous, brilliant, remarkable artists.
They don't need any help at all.
It's why Luca cast them in this film, honestly.
And I don't know why he keeps casting me,
but I'm grateful for the opportunity.
The roles are remarkable, his guidance is remarkable.
It's so much fun and loving,
and it's a wonderful environment to work in.
And they didn't need it, they didn't need a bit of advice.
So never once did any of you go to Michael and go,
what's going on here?
They got started before I did as well.
Yeah, he was on Broadway.
Right, he was on Broadway, Tony nominated, yeah.
When we started up this gypsy bandwagon.
Okay, so there is such a powerful line in this film
that not everything's supposed to make you comfortable.
In that line, Andrew, what do you think about that line?
Oh gosh, I don't know.
I like the line though a lot,
and I think that the only way we grow as human beings
is going through uncomfortable things.
I think comfort is anathema to growth and expansion,
and being challenged and connecting to others,
seeing the world through another's eyes,
and empathy, I think empathy is challenging
for us right now, and uncomfortable,
particularly when we want to remove ourselves
from other people and their point of view
as much as humanly possible,
because if it scares us,
we might be related in some way with our species.
So I feel like, I don't know,
I think the more discomfort in certain ways,
the better for our soul growth, I think.
Aya, how did that line make you feel
when you were doing it together?
Yeah, I'm like, well she said it to me.
In kind of a heated moment,
and then a moment of interesting power play,
and also what's the truth and what's not,
I think sometimes there's things
that the characters are saying
that it's like, you could look at it as a full quote,
but when you look at it in the context
of what's happening, and also the context
of these characters' positions,
where they are, what's driving them,
it might not necessarily be true,
or what they're saying behind it
might be a little bit more loaded.
And also it's like, Alma is, one could argue,
you know what I mean?
Someone could say that to her.
So those are some of the things
that come up for me, I guess.
Yeah, and in a larger sense, I guess,
yeah, all the context and the histories
that we're all walking around with every day
when we're interacting with each other,
how, I don't know, important that is,
and easy to forget, yeah.
How has Julia inspired you as an actor?
Oh my god, in so many ways, of course.
No, I mean, it's like, whatever, you're here.
Let me be careful to not get too,
I don't know, sappy or whatever,
but yeah, she's one of the most
formative women in my life,
and I feel like to be able to see somebody
just fully, I don't know, being themselves
and driven, but also to now know her,
and also, I don't know, discover
all these other amazing parts of her,
and she's an amazing partner, and mother,
and just, I don't know, a friend that you can
Well, I would say also.
Do that as well, and be, I don't know,
be a woman who cares about your career,
and cares about other people, it's cool,
it's cool to see.
But I think she also is a bit of a fashion muse to you.
Your golden globe.
Here we go, tie in, here we go.
Yeah, that's your golden globe from last year's outfit.
Which was brilliant, Loewe, that was good.
How'd you come up with that?
Share it for the people at home.
I knew I wanted to wear a suit,
I love to wear a dress, but I love to wear a suit,
and then I love, I mean, those 90s Armani suits,
they're just the best, and the story
of that moment, it was just, I don't know,
it was just such a fun moment.
I'm gonna bring it to work tomorrow,
and I want you to put it on.
Stop, are you kidding me?
Henry just had it on the other day.
Oh my gosh.
So you still have this suit.
Loewe.
This is back in the day when you would buy your own clothes,
before stylists, before people styled you, yeah.
So how'd it come about?
I mean, this was 1990.
I went into the Armani store, and as I recall,
downstairs is women's clothing,
and I went upstairs to the men's department,
and I remember I was, I put this suit on,
and I loved it, I was like, oh, it's great.
You know, it was too big in the waist,
and I just remember the man saying,
oh, well, you know, let me get the tailor,
and all of a sudden, this man came out.
Wow, this is like.
What's a tailor?
Yeah, I thought I was gonna have to go to the dry cleaner,
and you know, they have someone,
they took care of all of it right there,
Johnny on the spot, it was incredible.
I was very impressed, I was very taken with myself.
What was the premiere that you wore it to?
I wore it to the Golden Globes.
Oh, you were to the, that's why the Golden Globes.
Yeah, 1990, yeah.
So cool.
Golden Globes.
Well, good.
So cool.
Yeah, thank you.
Thank you, enjoy your banana bread.
Our banana bread.
